Thanks for the comments. Gotta love that leather smell as you sit in the car which reminds me, I want to condition it this weekend with some CG Leather in a Bottle, it sounds like promising stuff.

I'm not totally satified with the wheels it has, I mean I love the concave look the rears have but I prefer the MV4 honestly. I opted for these as the MV4 is renound for being too weak to handle run flat tyes and British roads so they crack :(. Anywho, LM's look much nicer ;).

Remap

After a month of waiting, my remap has finally arrived. It's the COBB Tuning Access Port that I mentioned previously, all I need to do is hook this up to the OBD II port and flash. I'm a bit nervous taking a near 100bhp jump and over 100lb/ft in this weather but what the hell ;). I'll run the car at AMD next month.

Next up is FMIC, DPs and another reflash by the COBB, I'll be sitting at about 420-430bhp then. Crazy what you can get out of just a stage 1 and 2 tune on this car.

Impressive!! I always enjoy seeing a BMW with x35 on the back, usually going like a bullet down the motorway, with me often wishing I was in the LCR at the time! The torque on these things is immense, and I love the Cobb Gadget too. Keep us updated :D

sweet.....like you say, could be a lot of squeeky bum time fun to start :D

I think so indeed, I just washed the car and the water froze around my feet. I'm hoping for a dry day again tomorrow so the tarmac is at last a little more aired out from moisture.

Iv been looking at the older 330D touring lately, surprising the power that can be gained on these diesels.

6cyl + turbo seems to be a powerful combination, I hear good things about the 330d & 335d.

TBH a standard 335i vs a Stage 2 LCR would see the LCR win by a little, I'd not bother having a go but remapped I hear the 335i is a different animal, making E46 M3's look silly in a straight line. It just so happens I have a friend withan E45 M3 ;).

I'll be there, maybe not as early as the olden days with my LCR but around midday :)

Thanks :), are you attending AMD next month?

What made you pick the COBB Jay? What was the key decision maker?

Hi Maz. I chose COBB because of its ease of use, endless R&D and superb customer support. The Access Port literally takes out your OE map, stores it and uploads which ever file you choose whether that be Stage 1 linear or aggressive, Stage 2 if you have DP's or Stage 2+ with DP's and FMIC, it does it all for you so simply. Then, should you wish to return to stock, just reflash your OE map so think of it as a more technically advanced REVO SPS. I also chose this as it has code reading, toubleshooting and live data logging capabilities, boost, timing, AFR etc etc. A lot of people in the US mount these on their dashboards while driving and use them as guages, in this sense think of it as a limited hand held version of VCDS crossed with pod guages.

It cost sround £500 which yes, is expensive but factor in that any remap is near around that price these days but the COBB AP comes with free lifetime updates, preloaded Stage 2 maps with Stage 3 Meth and Stage 4 BT maps being developed so it'll work out cheaper in the long run than taking it to a tuner. You do have the custom option which allows you to adjust on a dyno but COBB's R&D seems to be spot on and tested thoroughly every time.

On a side note, as BMW changes their ECU software so often (gets updated each time at the dealer), theres a chance that thw COBB AP won't recognise your ECU file. This just happened to me as I've just had the latest BMW flash, no problem though as COBBhas a service set up for rectifying this and releasing a new map for your ECU. I've mailed the file off and I should hopefully have it back today or Monday :). I'll review the performance of the car then.

Sounds pretty good and a lot like the Juice Boxes I been reading about. Thanks for info, will look into it and see if they do one for dervs.

My first choice was the JB but what put me off was that it sits in between the ECU wiring loom and the ECU. That part is fine but it's a bit of a pain to keep disconnecting it when off in for a service as I still have warranty, that and when it comes to electronics I have no confidence so the COBB was the best choice for me. The JBD sounds awesome though, circa 350bhp you'll get and torque that could move the ground in the diesel. I believe Evolve Tuning and P-Torque may also be able to offer you tuning solutions Maz :).

Very nice motor. My mates got a 335i and it's a sweet ride! He had it remapped after my recommendation and it's running over 400bhp now scares the crap out of me it's a beast! Enjoy :D

Remapped, finally!

Hi all,

I finally remapped the car so I wrote a little review, the car really is a performance weapon now and blows the LCR out of the water. Acceleration is just vicious.

I received the Access Port last week from AR Design who I may add have been superb and friendly throughout the whole 'getting it here' procedure from the USA. I went home that evening and downloaded the COBB AP Manger from their website, I then connected the AP to my PC via the supplied USB cable which Windows 7 had no problem installing a driver for. I unplugged the AP from my PC and went to the car to start the ECU flash but as I had the lastest dealer firmware flash a couple of months back, I expected to hit a wall and have the AP unable to read the the ECU properly. Anyway, I got into the car and shut the door, removed the OBD II port cover in the drivers side footwell and plugged in the lead supplied with the AP to the port, then the other end into the AP and without touching any buttons or pedals I pressed the start/stop button once to activate the ignition. Making sure that the radio, climate control and all other mod-cons were turned off I then looked at the AP and confirmed that I understood the controls, then clicked install. As I thought, unrecognised ROM message was displayed and the AP offered to take a copy of my ECU data and store it via the User Tools menu, of course I did this.

I took my AP into my house and back to the laptop, connected it up and transferred the ROM dump onto it via the AP manager, I then emailed this to COBB who emailed me back at lightning speed to say thank you, that they had received it that it could take up to 5days for them to sort this out for me. They were polite, friendly & professional which made this whole alien procedure (to me) of self-mapping seem like no biggy at all...well really it isn't but I live in fear since owning a Peugeot that every mishap is a recipe for a new car.
Less than 1 business day later, COBB emailed me back to say that they had updated their database and that I should go ahead and connect my AP to the Manager 2.0 and update it, they did this with fool proof instructions and again put my mind at rest. Update done and time to flash the car, connected the AP as before and hit Install, the AP now recognised my car and I clicked OK to confirm that, now onto the map selection. I had a choice (as I am stock) of Stage 1 Aggressive, Stage 1 Sport or Stage 1 Drive, each with aggressive or linear type mapping, I chose Aggressive/aggressive if that makes sense. The car then started bleeping, whiring, ticking as COBB says it would as the OE map was removed from the ECU and stored on the AP, this took about 7mins, then more noises while the flash was uploaded which took about 10mins and I killed this time surfing E90Post on my iPhone. Installation complete and the AP removed all error codes, I then removed the key from its slot and then pushed it back in and started the engine...perfect start up like always.

Now, the drive. This consisted of a warm up and then 10mins quick sprint as I have other plans tonight. Straight away you can tell that the car is more urgent, it wants to pull more and driving in the low rev range is easier and much more torquey. A little blip of the throttle shows the car willing to take off, you could easily hold the car on light throttle and it would kill most normal cars on the road, it feels really powerful with the feeling of a swell of power ready to gonnuts behind you and above all, so smooth. What you wanted to hear about is how it goes at full throttle, all I can say is WOW, what a great job COBB have done and THIS is how the car should be from the factory, acceleration is relentless and it pulls very very hard all the way up so I can now see why BMW weren't keen on letting the N54 produce numbers close to their flagship M3. It really goes like stink and is so much fun to drive now but watch the speedo, seriously! The car just feels better in every sense and doing away with the 'restrictive' OE mapping is a massive plus point, everything just ticks better with this new tune and I can't wait to drive it properly this weekend. To compare this to stock, performance wise is almost night and day, it's basically a new car and would easily wipe the floor with a standard 335i.

I'll try to add to this as the weeks go on and the car adapts/I drive it more but bottom line, this product is fantastic and I am 100% in love with my car .
