Was at combe on Saturday sat in a que waiting to get on the stand and previously on the way there my EPC light came on. Suddenly my temperature gauge was upto 120 and the red light was flashing, so engine off and then smoke coming from under the bonnet.

Seems the coolent was coming out the cap and dripping down (big puddle on ground).

So my first guess is that the fans are not coming on when hot, they did work before. I would imaging the EPC light is to show a problem with them also.

Any ideas on a fix?

You checked the fuses on the top of the battery. There are three, the one on the far right controls your AC and radiator fan, has a habit of blowing and melting.

So if its gone, you may need to buy a new fuse holder.

if the fans aren't coming on then first point to check for me would be the fuses on top of the battery

did you drive home from combe? how was it? pump failure would have made it a very interesting journey home.

Drive home and it was perfect, temperature stayed at 90 all the way, had a clear run and no traffic!

Will check the fuses cheers! Lets hope its that as i imagine it will be a easy fix :)

I've had it go twice on me, second time i needed a new fuse holder as the plastic surround on the fuse has melted so much it covered the contacts inside.

light will require clearing manually, either by vagcom/other diagnostic equipment to read the fault code or by disconnecting the battery, however the latter method doesnt tell you what caused the fault code.

doesn't sound like pump failure so fingers crossed its not, much more likely to be the fuse, also check for corrosion on the terminals.

Any one know which fuse it is, checked a minute ago and couldnt see any obvious fuse that had died! All the major 110amp ones were fine. The one right ont he end (small green 30amp) looked a bit bent but thats it!

I take it you didn't go on track for that session then? :cartman:
This happened to me once in traffic. It was the fans not cutting in because of the fuse on top of the battery.
It was a warm day though, I got sunburnt! My car stayed off track this year so you wouldn't have seen it. I saw a few Ibiza's and Leons on track, which was yours? I noticed a yellow one with colour coded bumpers keeping with a red Porsche the whole session.

Happened as soon as I got there so even if I did want to go on the track I prob couldnt of :(

Which fuse is it that goes?

Oh sorry, I misread that you were in the queue for a track session, not to get on the stand
It's the far right one as you look from the front of the car. Remove the fuse and check for any melted plastic which could be stopping the connection.
A tip for knowing that it's definitely this fuse (or circuit I guess) is whether the water pump still works when you turn off the engine. If you can't hear the humming after you switch off then it's linked. If the pump still works then it isn't the fuse. Just to note as well, my AC stopped blowing cold air.

Another tip is if your AC isn't as cold as normal. Thats how i found out

My AC hasnt been cold for ages :D

Checked the far right fuse tonight and one of the little fins had melted so it didnt look like it was blown from the top but after trying to pull it out it was melted!

Put a new 30amp fuse in and ran the car for about 20 mins and the fans started to spin up! Off to run outside now and check the air con and pump :D

Cheers guys

Ive only joined today and already sorted out the problem with my fan thanks to you guys!!! Cheers. I had a problem with my EPC light a few months ago when i disconnected my battery. I left it for a while (2/3 weeks) and eventually it went off. I think its timed or something to do with the amount of miles you cover .
