i really thought i had cured it yesterday with a brand new genuine maf.
the car was fine again last night, then tonight when the same symptoms occurred.
1st and second gear seems fine, pulls away smoothly, plenty of torque, car is willing to rev all the way round to approx 4000+ rpm(ok not exactly peak torque but i was experimenting).
tonight i went out, nice and slowly, built up engine temps to normal running, then went to a rather nice hill to see how it would fair.i hadn't even got to anything steep when i lost all turbo boost. slowed car to under 40 ish-mph,3rd gear, car hits a wall dead at 3200rpm,then 4th no turbo, car running like a tractor.

i pull over and turn the car off, wait less than 30 seconds, turn it back on and pull away, car is now pulling strongly again as if nothing has happened.
i have driven home approx 5 miles, and everything seems fine.
recently serviced by myself(oil and fuel filters)though this problem occurred first of all before i had changed the fuel filter.
my wife is,of course adamant that its the 10 litres of cooking oil in the tank, topped up with a 1/4 tank of derv the other night to try and thin it out.

i have had a search,a google, most saying MAF i have checked what i can see to be vacuum hoses, but to be honest how can the car just "cure" itself by switching it off and back on again???

oops,to add,no fault codes so far,but not checked tonights yet,and no engine lights.

Your car is going into 'limp mode' due to a turbo 'underboost' or 'overboost'.

The most likely cause is the turbo VNT mechanism (internal wastegate) sticking.

The cars see's the boost deviate from that requested by the ECU map and puts the car into a temporary low power mode, to preserve the engine incase something major has gone wrong.

The vnt vanes can be cleaned in a few different ways:

With heat - take the car for a long motorway journey for a few hours, the more weight in the car the better, if you have a trailer, tow it. This will burn off the offending crud.

Chemically - Unbolt the CAT from the turbo and spray in 'carbon remover' (Mr Muscle/barbeque cleaner) and work the actuator lever for 10mins, leave for an hour to soak, then clean up and reattach the CAT.

Or dismantle the turbo and scrape the crud off manually.

The problem could also be MAF, or a vac control leak (generally underboost) or an N75 boost control valve, or vac actuator capsule problem.

Get the fault codes read, as they can help to pinpoint the cause.

All TDI's with a VNT turbo are prone to this if the car is mainly used for short journeys.

didn't think it was needed on the tdi mark.(but its and easy thing to try )
ini thanks for the reply,
car has been used for short journies since we have had it,and i think it may have been stood for a month or so prior to us owning it(service/v5/tax things having a gap in).
i think a 6 quid run to and from the m6 toll road is in order at night,at high rpm ;)

mine does this, i actually use mine for food delivery as well as getting to and from work!
mine also has a 'chip' fitted by the previous owner.. honest guv could this also be why it is limp modein on me because the silly little chip (no doubt a resistor in a box haha) is demanding more power then the map wants to give? i am toying with the idea of removing the so called 'chip' anyway!

or is it simply because of the short journeys (short journeys but used for 4 hours at a time doing it)
if this is the case however, why dont all the taxi drivers in there skoda's get this problem?

Dont drive around at low revs in a higher gear, the TDI torque can promote this style of driving.

Pretend you have a 1.8T engine and rev it out to 4k or more, often.

A few weeks driving like this may help to free any deposits.

50 or 60 miles of towing a heavy trailer will free up my vnt mechanism, you can feel it happen.

The first 40 miles the car keeps limping, cycle the ignition and carry on, pretty soon the car stops limping.

This is not due to any 'high load' adaptation either (i have checked), just heat and a hard working VNT mechanism.

Extra fueling from a 'tuning box' may help cause extra carbon deposits, a 'remap/chip' with matching increased boost pressure should not make the problem worse.

believe me, i still try and drive it like it's a 1.8T,i wish it had some of the power.
lipmed tonight on the way home after 30 miles of slow traffic.turned car off and on again, and it was sound. i have a this week off, going to buy some cement and drive round for a day :D

Im getting a sticky turbo just now, quite a few posts on what it possibly could be....
I tend to drive around 31mph in 5th gear as much as possible, in effect no gas, and allowing the engine to pull the car along.

If I change my 31mph driving into 3rd gear, will this eventually clean the turbo VNT mechanism (gate). (I drive at 70mph for 20 minutes in the morning and evening.) Just as above, sometimes the turbo does not seem loud as it once was :(

Editing your spelling
yeah thats the problem dave, you need to exersize the turbo more, your low revving 5th gear driving isnt doing it any good. You can either strip it down and clean it up, get some WD40 on the actuator rod, or get some long hard drives in to free it up, muttley has commented before that a long hill with full throttle is best.
