Clutch Clonking noise??

I've got a tdi fr, over the last week I've been getting the occasional 'clonking like' noise when I pull off.

Its happened in both first gear and reverse when I've lifted the clutch pedal to the biting point, however I'm not sure if its anything to do with the clutch mechanism directly or something else. Whats more annoying is I can't re-create it on demand so I can't highlight it to the dealers.

Whilst on the move and going through the other gears its ok.

Anyone any ideas what it might be?

Thanks

With so little information it could be anything really, brokern engine mount, sticking clutch realise bearing , knocking exhaust etc etc. Occasional problems are a real bitch to sort out.

I am having the same problem in my cupra, mine sounds like a metallic clunking, and only does it in reverse and 1st. My car is totally standard

Sounds like the same thing.

Cars in on Friday for a service so I've mentioned it to the Dealer, but because its an intermitant problem I'm not holding out on them finding the problem. Just hoping its not something that is going to cause a problem in the future esp if its outside of warranty.

Anyone any ideas?

the bolts under the front chassis need to be retightened with a special tool.because it are spêcial bolts and the whole front drivetrain is from alu they need to be checked every service ...i've had this problem on my cupra ...

i think in english the bolts are named stretch bolts or so?? they need to be tightened on kilos or pounds but i dont know wich metric system you use in england...
i hope you guys understand me a littlee bit :(

Stretch bolts is the right term. Are you saying the bolts need to be retightened in the same way alloy wheel bolts need to be retightened and checked after they are put on?

i dont think much seat dealers are aware of the problem..i work at a seat dealer in belgium and i had to find the problem myself because seat spain didnt had any info about the problem..but if you use the cupra on trackdays or so or very hard cornering you clearly can see that the aluminium drivetrain onder the car really is moving..you can see that the bolts are moved a bit

I'll print this thread out and give it the dealer on Friday, its certainly a starting point anyway and I'll report back any findings.

It's a bit concerning there are bolts on the car that appear to work there way loose anyway, what would happen if they were to fall out - dangerous?

Whats frustrating is I've not heard the noise for the last few days - I would have thought if it was due to some loose bolts the noise would be heard all the time?

the bolts are not really loose because they are stretch bolts..its not that the drive train could fall off or so but it just moves a bit when cornering very hard..in my case i could see the marks in the drivetrain where the bolts previous had been en marks in the chassis that the drivetrain had been moved...if you take a big torque key you can easily give all the bolts a turn or two...

Hi, how did you get on when you visited the dealer?

I also have started experiencing intermittently this kind of noise, although mine perhaps is more of a groan noise, as if something is sticking on pull off, which releases itself after the car is moving. Seems to happen more when the car is hot on a long journey rather than when pulling off from cold.

Hi,

I've not heard this noise since the car has been in to the dealer (touch wood!).

They were interested in this thread as they weren't away of any issues with the stretch bolts. The dealer checked all the bolts were to the correct torque settings (which they were) and marked each one to monitor any movement. - Based on the fact they were all set to the correct torque settings I don't think this was the issue.

The only other thing that was replaced was the off side drop link as there was a 'nick' out of the rubber, so whether this caused any movement I don't know.

Sorry I can't be more conclusive than this.

Hi, I am experiencing this problem on and off in my FR TDI. The car has had the steering rack replaced previously due to this same noise I am experiencing just now, dealer blamed a bearing inside the rack for the noise (seemingly they are sealed so old rack was binned and diagnosis never confirmed). This of course could be a load of horse manure!

Anway, on cold days it can be heard, but when the temperature is above 15oC there is no noise. Today when it was 4oC, there was very noticable metallic grinding and knocking whilst turning right at low speed coming form the passenger front wheel. I have suspected that there is an expansion/contraction issue involved and this revelation involving "stretch bolts" could be the cause???

Anyone got photographs of said bolts??? Are these the bolts that attach the subframe to the body of the car??

The noise drives me more mad than the rattles:cry:

Just got mine fixed finally. It went in on thursday and they replaced the CV Joint on the drivers side. I thought that it was a long shot but the dealers were adamant so i let them get on with it as it was under warrenty (car only done 15k), I collected it yesterday and the noise has gone completely.

Noise now definitely gone after Grants replaced the dual mass flywheel. Thanks to the entire team at Grants for your professionalism and excellent service!
