Went to london on sunday to pick up my dad from heathrow airport. Did the usual checks, oil, water, tires, put petrol in and off i went.

Got to london in good time, but then got stuck in bumper to bumper traffic near the airport when i noticed steam coming from the bonnet, temperature was on the usual 90, but steam was flooding from the bonnet!

i seriously crapped myself, but couldnt pull over anywhere so put the heating on full blast to take pressure off the radiator.

Was stuck in the traffic for 45 mins before getting to the carpark, check the car and the water in the tank had totally gone! and noticed that the lid on the tank was not fully shut, so looks like the water had evaporated and steamed out through the gap! DOH!

once it cooled down i poured 3 1litre bottles of buxons finest mineral water to sort it out!

Journey home was totally fine.

Anyone else done that? i swear if i didnt notice the steam and did journey back without topping up the water, i think i would have blown up the radiator for sure!

If your REALLY wanting to be sure everything is okay change the oil aswell. this could have taken a big hit with the extra heat

checked the water this morn and its still pink, so im assuming antifreeze should be ok for now?

Pink is so :gay: ;)

The liquid should taste sweet too. But (as said) it's worth draining the system and refilling at the correct mix.

and do it with a more manly colour this time

mmm... the temp sensor that shows on the dash board is the coolent temp. 90C would be all it could maintain in an unsealed system (hot water needs to be sealed to be able to get above 100C with out turning to steam) so I wouldn't assume 90C was all your oil got too.

As such you've no idea how hot the engine would have got.... you've obviously not blown your gasket (oil and water mixing) so nothing to major.

But if you're in the same situation just put on your hazards and stop. A LOT of people carry water in their cars (for both them and the cars) you'd be amazed at how helpful people can be when you're in their way.

You're just lucky its winter.

As above has said always worth having water in the car, same thing happened to me once but my coolant top broke (don't ask) middle of summer and about 8 miles from my house, Lucky i had tesco's finest strawberry water on the car :D worked a treat but wouldn't suggest it.

If you've got hands and a jack then you might aswell change your oil and coolant as someone has posted once oil has got very hot then it never works aswell as it has done
