Hi All,

New problem, Ive just been out in th car and I was sitting in traffic and the temp has gone up to 110

Ive had a look under hte bonnet and neither of the fans were spinning.

Checked the fuse for the fans and it is fine.

Could it be the temp sensor?

Also note ive changed the auxilery belt today.

Thanks,

Alex

Ive seen a few other people saying that they had problems with their cars when they put the A/C on and that is the same thing that happened with me, put the A/C on and thats when the issues happened.

OK ive been back outside and the car has cooled down below 90c and when I started the car the fans started working again, and cooling the engine down again.

Now ive messed about to see if the fans kick in with the A/C on and with it off and it is kicking in fine both times now.

This thing shown in pic below is making a ticking noise and gets quicker when the fans run really fast and the going to kicking slowly when the fans are spinning slower.

At times the ticking does stip, but not when the fans stop.

Any ideas?

Hi Guys,

This problem has happened again, but this time while I was in stopped traffic yesterday.

The temp got upto 120c and has manages to blow the radiator.

I called the AA out and the guy said that the radiator has gone.

Does anyone know what is causing the car to overheat? None of the fans were spinning at all. Didnt matter weather the aircon was on or off.

I was sitting in traffic with the air con on and it iver heated. The AA man thought it could the the thermostat?

I would love to know what that ticking is because it's really quite noticeable when the bonnet's up - but clearly normal.

A little research makes me think that it must be the "evap purge valve (N80)". I stand to be corrected, but if it is, this is its function:

"The EVAP or evaporative emission system is a control system to keep vapours from evaporation in the fuel tank from getting into the atmosphere. The fuel tank is not vented, but rather the vapours are piped to the carbon cannister where the charcoal element absorbs the vapour. This is actually a vapour "storage" device. Under certain engine operating conditions, the ECU activates the Cannister Purge Valve (N80) which opens and allows the engine vacuum to suck the fuel vapours back out of the carbon cannister. This purges the vapour, allowing the cannister to absorb more vapour."

Oh, and the clicking should be most noticeable for the first 5 mins or so from cold start (I guess when emissions are at their peak?).

Nice one GrayT, the ticking noise would tie in with what I remember from the MG forums as a common question of ticking noise from the engine, usually turned out to be the purge valve. Hopefully nothing to worry about.
