Volkswagen's first TSI direct-injection petrol engines with combined turbocharger and supercharger boost go on sale this weekend in the revised Golf line-up.
The 1.4-litre TSI engine is offered in 140bhp or 170bhp - very high power outputs for an engine of such small capacity - but remains economical: the 170bhp unit (which also delivers 177lb-ft of torque) returns 38.2mpg.
The premise of the engine is that the supercharger kicks in at
lower engine speeds - ie at start-off - but this gives way to the turbo mid-range. Volkswagen promises 'excellent drivability and performance throughout the range with no turbo lag and high maximum torque.'
The 170bhp version of the 1.4 TSI replaces the 150bhp 2.0 FSI; not only is it more economical, and returns reduced carbon dioxide emissions (178g/km, compared to 192g/km), it is considerably quicker - it does 0-60mph in 7.9 seconds (a second faster than the 2.0 FSI), and can do 137mph.
Volkswagen is also introducing a new 170bhp/258lb-ft 2.0 TDI diesel engine to the Golf range. A version of the 140bhp unit already on offer, it has piezo fuel-injection technology and a particulate filter. It's capable of 0-60mph in 8.2 seconds and 137mph, and returns 46.3mpg and 160g/km.
Further updates to the Golf include revised GT models, which will now look more like the GTI, with a new front grille, GT badges, 17" alloy wheels, lowered suspension and twin exhaust pipes. The GT spec is offered with the 2.0 140bhp/170bhp TDI engines as well as with the 1.4 TSI; prices for these models will start from £17,995. The 140bhp 1.4 TSI is also offered with Sport trim (from £15,995).
so how long before SEAT might see this?
