Now that VW have finally confirmed this engine (max. 168BHP Turbo & Supercharged) is appearing in all VW group models and will replace the 2.0 FSI, any ideas when it's going in the Leon - hopefully with the DSG box...

Golf GT
Volkswagen's first TSI direct-injection petrol engines with combined turbocharger and supercharger boost go on sale this weekend in the revised Golf line-up.

The 1.4-litre TSI engine is offered in 140bhp or 170bhp - very high power outputs for an engine of such small capacity - but remains economical: the 170bhp unit (which also delivers 177lb-ft of torque) returns 38.2mpg.

The premise of the engine is that the supercharger kicks in at lower engine speeds - ie at start-off - but this gives way to the turbo mid-range. Volkswagen promises 'excellent drivability and performance throughout the range with no turbo lag and high maximum torque.'

The 170bhp version of the 1.4 TSI replaces the 150bhp 2.0 FSI; not only is it more economical, and returns reduced carbon dioxide emissions (178g/km, compared to 192g/km), it is considerably quicker - it does 0-60mph in 7.9 seconds (a second faster than the 2.0 FSI), and can do 137mph.

Volkswagen is also introducing a new 170bhp/258lb-ft 2.0 TDI diesel engine to the Golf range. A version of the 140bhp unit already on offer, it has piezo fuel-injection technology and a particulate filter. It's capable of 0-60mph in 8.2 seconds and 137mph, and returns 46.3mpg and 160g/km.

Further updates to the Golf include revised GT models, which will now look more like the GTI, with a new front grille, GT badges, 17" alloy wheels, lowered suspension and twin exhaust pipes. The GT spec is offered with the 2.0 140bhp/170bhp TDI engines as well as with the 1.4 TSI; prices for these models will start from £17,995. The 140bhp 1.4 TSI is also offered with Sport trim (from £15,995).

so how long before SEAT might see this?

Sadly I wouldn't expect the excellent TSI in a Seat (at least not a Leon) any time soon, certainly not for at leat a year...

I can see these being the most fragile engines VW has ever made!

I can also see them being worthless in a few years time due to horrific repair costs (charger rebuild every 40-60k?)

to be fair, superchargers have come on a lot since to old G60 which I guess you're refering to... The Merc's are pretty reliable with their Kompressor's now for example

Mini Cooper S's aren't, and I also know of Merc Kompressors going so I think I'm pretty justified with my comment!

The 1.4 TSI isn't a replacement for thet 2.0 FSI. The 160 HP, 1.8 TFSI is the replacement for the 2.0 FSI, at least for Audi. The whole VAG engine matrix is a mess: Big gaps in performance and price and al lot of engines having more or less the same specs.

1.6 8V 102 HP
1.4 TSI 140 HP ( VW Only )
2.0 FSI 150 HP
1.8 TFSI 160 HP ( Audi only for now )
1.4 TSI 170 HP ( Golf GT )
2.0 TFSI 200 HP ( Golf GTI / Leon FR )
2.0 TFSI 220 HP ( Audi A4 DTM )
2.0 TFSI 230 HP ( Golf GTI 30 year anniversary )
2.0 TFSI 240 HP ( Leon Cupra )
3.2 FSI 250 HP ( R32 )
2.0 TFSI 260 HP ( S3 )

Who needs an engine range with 10 HP increase. They should add an low cost 120/130 HP engine at the bottom of the range and have at lease 25 HP incerments. The direction for usng turbo's is a good one imo.

I can't see VW putting an engine on the market that is aimed at business users who do tens of thousands of milesa year, that is going to be fragile. It would be commercial suicide.
Supercharger technology has moved on and the TSi , as has been said, does not rely on the SC all the time.
I reckon other manufacturers will see how this goes and possibly do their own versions. Tax incentives and cutting emissions drive this kind of thing, and if the market works out, everyone will want a slice.
They might be a cheap buy secondhand if a lot are sold to user/choosers, even moreso if Toxxin turns out to be right!

There's a 1.8 TFSI ?? never spotted that in the Audi range, I wonder if it's a 16v head rather than the old 1.8 20v...

Although what the heck Audi need a 1.8 and 2.0 TFSI for I don't know...

Benefits of the TSI ...

Some of the notes on the sheet I was given from VW

The GT TSI has an advantage over the 2.0TDI 170, lower price at an equal tax rate

This is going to be a rare car with only 4% of Golfs being planned as TSI's. Predective RV's are at or even above same spec TDI's. GT TSI 41% vs TDI 41%

170 TSI CO2 = 175 (22%)
170 TDI CO2 = 160 (22%) (due to 3% additional charge which has been re-introduced)
