Having at long last changed my crusty mats I thought I would post up some pics showing the aluminium footrests I made and fitted about 4 months ago. I bought some R pedals and thought they would go very nicely together having seen others do it.

I had seen similar footrests made by someone on here and actually bought his last left hand foot rest off him however it is only afterwards that I realised the shape had changed since my model (my one tapers to a point at the bottom) so I couldn't use it (I still have the one I bought available willing to pass on at cost ie no profit if anyone wants it!). Anyhow, given I used a hacksaw, standard hand drill and metal file I think they came up OK considering I've never done any metalwork before. A couple of holes slightly off but not so as to really notice. Used scratch resistant aluminium and although it is starting to show a few minor surface scratches it's not to the extent it spoils it. Might look for some allen-type screws for them.

You'll see my Seat Sport gear knob in a couple of pics. Bl00dy expensive but I love the looks and it feels very much better than the standard, giving it a very slightly shorter throw. In the last pic you'll also catch a glimpse of some ebay sill plates I fitted - much cheeper than Seat ones, though I had to shorten them to make sure they stopped short of the rubber door seal. Last thing left for me to do is fit W8 light. Just ordered one from Germany as couldn't locate a sunroof version at decent price in UK. Leaving the exterior totally standard as I like to catch people unawares. :)

the W8 light is an excellent Mod......
how long did it take you to make the footrests
I guess about 3 hours in total (I would be much quicker if I did it again).

Steps were:

1) Make rough template by folding stiff sheet of paper over the footrests, remove and cut around the folds (suprisingly accurate).

2) Mark outline of templates on 3mm aluminium with marker pen, clamp to bench and hacksaw out (cuts easily). I drilled out one small section of the right hand footrest where it has a half crescent. Easily filed out with a curved file.

3) File off all the edges as smooth as you can get it - I tapered mine as well.

4) Tape the templates on to the cut out aluminium and draw a grid in pencil so that each box is 1cm square. Put an 'X' on each intersection wher you want a hole. Also mark out the holes for your fixing screws.

5) I then used a metal punch to make a small dent and get an accurate biting point for the drill on each 'X'.

6) Clamp the metal to a block and drill out all the holes the diameter you want (very noisy). I used an ordinary drill but if you have access to a pillar drill or a facility to convert your hand drill into one it would help and cut the time down no end.

7) Increase the bit size or use the drill bit designed for making countersunk holes to finish off each hole. Make the countersunk holes a bit bigger for the fixing screws.

8) I removed the left hand footrset from the car and drilled the metal casing so the fixing screws were accommodated. I drilled pilot holes through the right hand rest in situ.

9) Finish of the plates with some very fine wet sandpaper and fit the things!

A pleasing little project to do.

While I'm at it Sam - where are your footwell lights fitted? Do you have any pics? I presume it is linked to the wiring for the interior light so it comes on when the door opens?

Cheers
Gray

Hey mate,
The footwell lights are not actually fitted at the mo, cos a careless passenger (not found out who yet![:@] ) kicked the pasenger one and snapped the inside of the neon....they are cold cathode ones! i have a new one to fit....PLUS A shiney stainless protector!

They were not wired into the interior light. i took the live from the radio (so they were on when the ignition was on) down the dark hole that is behind the radio (to hide wires), through a switch, so i could turn them off during daytime for example, then one went to the passenger side and the other to the drivers foot well...... I am sure i have a photo somewhere, when i first did it.... will check out my CDs at home later........I really want to get them in again.....was a nice touch together with the red glow from the W8 light.....:)

the passenger one was fitted just where the soft fabric/fibre board material is after the dash finished. i made sure it was out of sight as you looked at it so you only saw the glow....it was abit of a heath robinson fit (PLEASE DONT SHOOT ME) but i pierced four small holes through the material and kept the light in place with two tiny cable ties at each end.....
The drivers one was again cable tied near to where your shins are......there is like a plastic part of the dash with slots cut out of it...... i wasnt sure to start with, but you deffo cant see the tube when you look into the car and again it gives a glow effect. Will sort some kind of piccy if i cant find one of them fitted!

Thanks Sam, if you do dig out photo's some time I wouldn't mind seeing the effect - but don't sweat over it!

Your interior looks really cool there, nice one.

I've got on order at the moment a new dash fascia in silver, I'm also going to order up some TT pedals in the next week or so too... trying not to spend too much so I've got money for coilovers.

Cheers. I thought about a silver dash fascia for a while but decided against it. However, I do think it would work well with the TT pedals as they have a more modern look.

Fitted the new fascia yesterday.

Good job. Funnily enough I think that looks better with the turn switch heating/fan controls you've got than it probably would with a climate control unit. Nice. Do you think you might do the air vent surrounds in time (I think they're available aren't they?), or would that be overkill!

Unfortunately my attention wandered when reading your description, when you mentioned your new gear knob. :ban:

No promises - I'll have to think on that one Stokoe. To be honest I don't really want to start going into this as a mini-industry (more down to the effort than the money), and fact is my drilled holes and general finish are not quite up to the standard of the original supplier. Guess you don't notice from a distance, but you do closer up. Anyhow, like I say I'll think on it and let you know - also depends on if I've got enough aluminium left, otherwise I would have to order in a minimum size of sheet.

Think that's an excellent 'home grown' mod, but does look a lot of hard work!
