Also, beware the DPF, if its full and needs a regen you'll get shitty mpg until its burned off, had this recently, took mine out (58 plate fr tdi) gave it a bit of hooligan driving for a half hour, mpg back to normal now, 75mpg 40 minute motorway commute, high 40's regularly and up to low 50's on occasion.

lol camera's that measure mpg now that is worrying.

And mine is on 28k too fox, when did your service like come on cos mine is on now and thats like 2k early, over 100k thats 2 bloody services! anyway might have summat to do that mine has used a fair bit of oil but i had some problems last winter so might be the reason, plus the oem+ bit obviously.

Amended the post just for you mate ;)

Mine's just under 28K but for the sake of a couple of hundred miles i rounded up...
Mine was serviced at 19K or just over so i'm expecting the 1K mile count down in the next 500 miles or so, i'm sure its got a mind of its own anyway so we'll see.

Havent seen many CR170's suffering from DPF issues to be fair... mine regens fairly regularly (about once every 2 months) as my daily commute is stop start traffic with a short stint on the motorway and although i have to drive in lower gears to keep the revs around 2000rpm i dont have to thrash the car to get it to go through the process.

She's done 40k so a few under the belt!

DPF cleaner might be worth a try then!! We've only had the car 5 months or so, it may be a bit clogged up from the previous owner?

Cheers peeps!

Without making you or your mrs feel even more embarrased, you are using 6th gear on the long runs right??? :D

Just makes no sense you're getting good MPG around town and not on a long run - Almost impossible to see how that could be happening to be honest???

DPF is the Diesel Particulate Filter, basically it just catches the soot in the exhaust then every now and again heats up to stupid temps to burn it all off rather then it constantly dumping it out of the back when you boot it (Like a remapped older diesel will do - you see the cloud of smoke) - It's all just a load of nonsense that the EU have made manufacturers do so they appear cleaner but in my mind it doesn't work as the soot still comes out at some point!

VAG's DPF, the bane of all warm hatch diesel drivers.

Diesel Particle Filter, basically a filter that collects all the nasty stuff from your exhaust and burns it off when the system reaches a certain temperature. There is a leaflet lying around somewhere that says to regen the system you need to travel at 40mph in 4th for 10 mins, so you get the idea, although its more like 70 in 5th for 20 mins tbh.

The VAG accepts no responsibilty for the DPF clogging so you have to pay if it does and you cant regen on your own (a little light comes on your screen when its time to blast on the motorway or A38 for you I suppose) and if you dont it will go into limp mode sticking at 2k revs as you crawl to your nearest dealership for fixing.

Some of us :) have had our DPF's removed, as well as removing the clogging problem it also allows for more power to be achieved from your motor, think of it as a de-cat from your RS days (should you have played with it).

Hope that covers it.

ha ha ha 'ol quick draw macaaw beat you to it!!

Nick, are they actually 6 speed?? lol

Is the DPF worth removing then? I assume a friendly MOT station might then be required?

If its the same as de-catting would it have to be mapped to reep the benefits like a petrol is?

I wouldn't worry about the DPF unless you start getting errors from it, I certainly don't think that's the reason you're getting poor MPG on a run and not around town, that must be down to driving style or possibly something else?!? I really can't work that one out unless like I say neither of you have found the 6th gear yet :)

I shouldn't laugh but i made that mistake when I first got my old Megane Sport, i drove all the way home from Wales in 5th gear without realising it was even a 6 speed box!!

friendly MOT always advised. Your car will need to have the DPF mapped out or else it will try and regen with nothing there, which cant be good.

2 choices this way, either you get a tuner to bore out your existing dpf and weld back on retaining standard look and usually cheaper or you buy a miltek down pipe. Searching de-dpf or dpf removal will bring up loads of posts on here mate.
