I've got a courtesy 1.2 TDI at the moment and have to say, what is the point in this car? Its much slower than my 1.6 TDI, noisier, only 4 mpg more economical over the same 20 mile 70mph drive, handles worse, steering wheel and gear knob feel horrible and the seats aren't very comfortable.

It seems car manufacturers have reached their diesel economy peak, my old 1.9 TDI FR was more economical than both my 1.6 TDI and this 1.2 TDI on motorway journeys. These small engined cars have to try too hard to stay at the national speed limit.

From now on, I'm sticking to more powerful 2.0 TDI engines, same economy and twice the fun.

I gather the 1.2 is designed more for town work.... which seems odd if it has a DPF and therefore needs longer runs. I read somewhere that the diesels all have DPFs now, some Euro malarky or something for diesel cars although whoever wrote it may have been wrong.

If only you had written this 4months ago
saying that - doesn't the 1.4 & 1.6 have DPF issues even more ;)

Porky
LOL, my car was at the dealers because of DPF active regen juddering issues. After putting up with it for a year, they have released a software update which is supposed to cure the problems.
Will keep the forum posted to confirm whether it works or not.

i had one for 3 days from the garage. So slow. Only got going when it was in 4th gear.

Not impressed. Got a bigger boot than mine !!!!!!!!!!!!

Well I'm waiting for mine to come end of May. I'm located in Greece and here they do not offer 1.6TDI or 2.0TDI for the IBIZA. But only in other models, they have the 1.6TDI. I think maybe it's new intro to the SEAT market in Greece in term if engine wise.

Right now the price of petrol is average 1litre = €1.75 (about £1.56) here. Well for many it's not much but it's burning my pocket. I agree 1.2 is not as much fun as it's bigger brothers. However it's more fuel economical, lower insurance cost, and zero road tax here in Greece.

Prior to ordering this 1.2TDI, I've seen a YouTube video of the VW Polo 1.2TDI, it's showing 3.1-3.4 litre/100km, now there isn't many cars that can yield that amazing figure.

Of course at the end of the day, it depends on each and every individual's own needs and affordability. If one look around in Europe, people are getting smaller and more economical cars to move in town and even on high way. Well I personally prefer the 1.2TDI than a SMART for the same price. JMHO.

PS: just the other day, there was a TOYOTA MR2 on highway which was going at 110kmh which the road speed limit was 120kmh. My current 70hp Ibiza 6L zoomed passed him at 120kmh. Talking about economy crisis I guess. :)

An interesting point this, although I think there are quite a few more of the bigger oil burner owners here, so there would be more DPF comments I guess. There's not been much discussion recently into DPF problems, more the way the car ticks over (I'd describe this as lumpy) when it does a regen.

Looking at the spec of the 1.2 it looks like a 1.6 with 1 cylinder missing, bore and stroke are the same and it produces about 3/4 the power. So I'd guess the regen situation would be similar between them.
