I have noticed that my car will want me to upshift when I'm driving at 1800rpm for longer than 10 seconds, and will ask me to downshift when I'm below 1000. Some cars would however die if you drove below 1700rpm. I know that the lower the rpm, the lower the consumption. But what is the ideal rpm to drive at that saves fuel and doesn't kill our small engine? Thanks

hmmmm from 1.4tsi owner with DSG. the DSG would change gear at 2,000rpm and would drop a gear when rpm falls to 1,200rpm.

Cars will happily drive at tickover rpm in 1st and 2nd gear (even up a steep hill) with out any problem at all. For the higher gears, it all depends on when the car starts to struggle. So listen to the engine, if its struggling, you will use more fuel.

However, on a level surface or down a slight hill, most cars don't have a problem with 1000 rpm, just remember to change down a gear before you go uphill. Engines can run all day at tickover rpm, so long as the engine load (resistance..i.e. hill) isn't to great for the torque the engine produces.
