Morning,

I have a problem

I was hoping my car would behave itself until it's traded in in three weeks time. So far it's given me three years of mostly trouble free motoring!

I popped out to the shop this morning and very annoyingly ended up going through a mahoosive pot hole at 40mph. Usually I actively avoid all pot holes on my journeys as I know where most of them are, but this one took me by surprise :(

So, pulling into the shop car park in second gear, I notice a sort of tapping/rattling noise coming from the passenger side (outside). I put my window down and it's even louder.

I had a quick look around the wheel, brakes, under the car and in the engine bay but can't see anything obvious.

It only happens when my foot is on the accelerator. Take it off and the noise completely disappears. Even more weird is that it doesn't happen at all in first gear.
I was doing a bit of testing on the way home and first gear is perfect (however hard or soft acceleration is) but second gear it happens 100% of the time. Third gear the noise quietens down and 4th/5th its hardly audible. I don't know whether that's just due to road/tyre noise drowning it out at those sorts of speeds.

So, important things to note:

  • 2013, '13 plate 1.2 TSI 105hp
  • 15,000 miles on the clock
  • Hit a violent pot hole, at speed whilst accelerating.
  • Can't reproduce noise in first gear
  • Noise most pronounced in second
  • Doesn't happen if revved in neutral, nor at idle.
  • 'Fuel low' warning light was on at the time, 2 small bars left (20 miles)
  • No recalls done in its lifetime AFAIK (none applicable)
  • Most audible with window down driving alongside a wall
  • Can also hear inside the car with windows closed
  • Pot hole could, of course be 100% unrelated and coincidental.

Hope someone can shed some light and suggest some things to look out for, otherwise its another painful trip to the dealers :help::help:

Hi,

You probably don't even have the car anymore, since you posted this nearly 6 years ago lol.

But I have the same engine, with I think the same problem. Did you end up finiding out what it was?
