I am having the 1.2 TSi DSG engine, which should have a turbo. but really i am having hard time hearing or even feeling the turbo kick in while on 'S' mode and pressing hard.

I've looked around but cant find for this specific engine at what RPM exactly does the turbo kick in. in my Passat 1.4 TSi DSG i can easily feel the turbo kicking in around 3000-RPM and hear its low pitch whistle...

so can anyone advice how to make sure my turbo is properly working?! maybe i am just overreacting!!

Actually i can hear the turbo whistle on mine if i silent the radio, but i don't know at what rpm exactly the turbo kicks in.

I have the 1.4 which is essentially the same engine. I have no idea when the turbo kicks in, it seems to have massive torque from really low revs.

As far as I can judge, it's there all the time unless you are below 1000rpm as the max torque is developed at 1500rpm and it couldn't do that without the turbo.

These new EA211 engines are absolutely brilliant and they are all made by Skoda!

Cant agree more about how brilliant is small new engine, specially combined with the DSG.
Its a looot fun driving really in both cruising or racing...

How many kms u have on it now?

I drove that engine (Ibiza 1.2 manual) and actually you dont feel the kick....because there is none.

Torque is widely spread throught the revs. Since there is a reaaaaaally realy small turbo on that engine, there is not enough torque to feel that kick.

Are you sure it was the TSI? It has 70% more torque than the non turbo engine - you should be able to notice that!

yup, pretty sure. Dont get me wrong, It DOES have torque and as you say, a whole lot more than the 2.slow N/A engine. but there is not a massive spike in torque, its distributed along the rev range. Since it's a small turbo, Lag is virtually 0, therefore, you do not feel the typical "nothing....nothing....nothing......BOOOOOOOOOST!!" of bigger engines and bigger turbos.

Absolutely, but I don't think it's because it is a "small" turbo. The increase in power and torque suggest it is not.

It is just an example of how far turbo technology has moved on from the early days. Torque lag is gone and will soon be forgotten.

Well done VW (Skoda).

What bhp is your car? Don't they now do 80bhp through to 105bhp on the 1.2tsi? When I had mine I could feel it kick in, although it was smooth. Once it was mapped running 129bhp it definitely kicked in lol

I wouldn't worry too much - unlike my old 2.0 PD TDI, which was very on/off turbo, my 1.8 is extremely smooth - but you can tell the torque/power is there when you look at the speedo!

These engines are very close to solving the mystery of excellent power, delivery and fuel consumption IMO. Regularly see 42-46MPG on the motorway.

I find there's a real punch of power from about 1500 RPM in any gear but then I was coming from a 1.2l Corsa which had no power anywhere on the rev band so the difference was night and day!

Also, I can hear a whistle from about 50mph but I have a feeling that might be wind noise rather than turbo noise.

why are you expecting to hear the turbo? I can't hear the (significantly larger) one on my 2.0 TDI. as others have said it is pretty damn small by turbo standards, and it will be spun up pretty quickly down the rev range (very close to idle) so any lag will probably be disquised by the gear change on the box anyway.

As Keith says, you probably won't hear it - as it is small, it will spin up early and quickly (I think even the 1.8 begins to spool at 1250rpm but full chat is ~2000rpm) and you'd be hard pressed to hear it.

I could only hear the snail on my old PD 2.0TDI if I had the windows down and was driving around slowly. Until it decided to explode, but that's another story... :drive2:

However, I can hear the turbo on my 1.8 fairly readily at times - that could be down to where it is in the engine bay though - at the back, at the top, exposed. The sound actuator may also play a factor in the noise too.

I don't think this post is active anymore but just in case anyone else happens to stumble across it...

I have a 1.2 TSI FR (2015) and I've found that in both 2nd and 3rd gear the turbo prodominantly kicks in around 2400rpm - 3000rpm, but as others have mentioned there is power in every gear as long as you're above around 1800rpm.
