Hi guys,

My 1.2tsi fr has always seemed a little rough going from 1st gear to second. It's always bothered me but I thought that's how this gearbox is. However, I've just got a courtesy car which is a 1.2tsi i-tech and it's nice and smooth. I've also got some knocking sounds when changing gear which you can only notice with the windows down but my brother spotted it when I pulled into his driveway the other week.

My question to you all is, does anyone else have these problems and should I go to the dealer to get it looked at? I'm going back now to pick my car up and I will talk to them about it then but I'd like to know everyone elses opinion on the matter.

Cheers.

I spoke with the guy at the service desk and he said it shouldn't be rough and the noise might be normal but it's worth getting it checked. Hopefully it get's fixed.

Mine makes some clicking noises when changing from first to second, and from third to fourth. Most noticeable when the windows are open going past a wall etc. I always thought it was normal.

Not noticed any harshness when changing gear though, apart from crunching into reverse if I haven't come to a complete stop (annoying) as we also have a Mini Countryman which doesn't do this but I guess it's down to the quality of the gearbox!

The thing that is annoying me at the moment is the Air Con. When I turn it on, it gets cold and have the fan speed on '1', I can hear what can only be described as two CD's being rubbed around together. Incredibly annoying! Looks like I'll be going back to the dealers shortly!

I've got the same issue with my aircon! I haven't told seat yet as I want them to fix the gearbox issue first. It's so annoying! I have to play music pretty loud to drown it out.

I have a 1.6 tdi cr and it is noisy too, changing from 1st to 2nd, it makes a noise when the clutch is engaging after changing to 2nd like something is loose.

I suspect it's the flywheel or the release bearing as it makes a rattling noise too and when I press the clutch it stops doing it.
I've been at Seat and they said it was normal but I dont believe in them.

Strange that, Let me know what they say if you end up mentioning it to them, I'll report back too if I ever get it booked in! Coincidentally they called me this week to pop in as they 'think they can do something for me' as I've had the car on PCP for two years now....

The gear noise doesn't really bother me as I think its pretty normal, that said, we could be talking about a completely different noise so best get it checked out if you're worried. After all, thats what the warranty is for I guess!

I got it checked over by Seat it was with them for a few days and they have come back with.... "Everything is normal"...

Not sure where to go from here. The noise from the aircon is pissing me off but apparently that's a "standard operational noise". I've never had a car that makes that kind of noise! I'm also really sick of people saying "how come your car sounds like a tin can when you drive away?"

If anyone has any advise please let me know!

Some video would be helpfull to compare with mine.
Although I don't know if my car has the same gearbox.

As I told you before, my video was made outside.
Yours is inside so we cannot compare.
If it's normal or not I don't know but at least it's a very common problem.
I went to a garage specialist in gearboxs and they told it's normal in this gearbox. They are tipically noisy. They also told me this gearbox is a very old design but reliable...

Yeah that's exactly what mine sounds like. The dealership seemed to think it was normal too.

It's a shame really because it just makes it feel cheap. :(

I have a 1.2tsi sportrider and the gearbox makes all sort of noises similar to the ones in the videos. It's totally normal for our gearbox though. The noise almost seems to correlate to when the shifter "pops into gear", I'd assume it must be a combination of the linkage and engagement sleeve. It's best heard in a garage at night with the car off and doors open. As long as the car is "popping" into gear and not out of gear, I wouldn't be too concerned about it :)
