1.2TSI or 1.6TDI MPG?

I've got the 1.2 TSI And I love it. The two engines put out the same bhp. The diesel will have a little more torque and pull in gear but the petrol is very refined (not that the diesel is not) and pulls all the way from 1500 rpm to the red line. The 1.2 certainly feels quicker then the book figures would suggest. The only minus I would say is when fullly loaded and on the motorway, it can feel a little underpowered when in 6th.

MPG wise, the petrol will do between 40-50 MPG but it all depends how you drive it and what sort of journeys you do. I find the 1.2 will struggle to do much above 40 MPG when doing 70-80 on the motorway. Drop this down to 60 and it will nudge 50 MPG. more relaxed A/B road journeys will see mid 40s to 50. My best ever is 53.3 (trip computer) on a 14 mile commute back from work. From reading on here it would appear that diesel is Better but not by a massive amount. With petrol being cheaper, there is not an awfull lot on it.

Another thing to consider is that the diesel obviously has a DPF which CAN become clogged when subject to lots of short journeys. Some suffer from this issue, others don't.

I would say if your doing shorter journeys consider the petrol. More motorway work then maybe the diesel. The best way though, take a drive in both and see what you think :)

I have a 1.6 TDI Ibiza, I know it's not a Leon but the same engine so I though I'd give my feedback.

Regarding MPG I would say it's not actually much better than the TSI - on the motorway doing about 75mph with cruise control mine will average about 45-46mpg. If you drive like a granny you can get silly mpg from it, highest average for a trip I ever got was 71.2mpg but thats the exception not the rule.

I don't tend to hang about - so my mpg is generally high 40's when not on the motorway. And it was better before i put the 17" wheels on.

So I'd say unless you're doing serious miles, you're probably better off with the TSI.

But definitely try to get a test drive in both and see what you prefer, the Leon's a heavier car so the mpg might be even less!

Thanks for the reply :)

Car will be doing 16 miles a day 4 days a week but could do 250 mile the other day.
Keep reading the high MPG rate on the 1.6 TDI but every body on here only seems to get 50ish:confused: which puts in into the petrol range

I hope to be trying both this afternoon:D

The petrol engine is lighter which helps make the front end feel lighter and changes direction quicker. The derv is not quite as responsive although both lumps suffer mild turbo lag the TSi picks up better. Both engines can give patchy consumption figures and the TSi is know to eat allot of oil early on and suffer turbo rattle. Although there is a fix for the rattle, case of working out if the slightly more expensive TDi pay's off financially long term as well.

Mine had the turbo rattle which was fixed with a new turbo under warranty. Mine appears to have not used any oil :) still sitting just below max on the dipstick and 6,000 miles in.

The 1.6TDi we have is 'OK' - the mpg is bettered easily by the octavia, probably because it needs working harder.

I like the 1.2TSi, but it's a little underpowered for the Leon (works really well in the Ibiza)

Specwise, the SE Copa is really good though, it rides really well

Do you mean underpowered in general or just at higher speeds and full loads etc? Certainly when on my own or one up it never feels short of power. These engines seem to be kicking out a bit more then they should be as well ranging from 110-125 bhp. I guess you can always remap it :D

My 1.2TSi averages around 38-40mpg. I do mostly town driving, however, 60mph = 40mpg and 70 is about 35mpg. 80mpg goes down to about 30mpg.

The car does feel quite quick, especially in 2nd gear! However i am only 18 and its the fastest car ive driven :p

got the 1.2 here and im properly impressed with its performance. best mpg ive had is bout 43 but its alot of stop start driving round where i live so that kills fuel economy. can also say itll do more than its book top speed( had 125 in 5th @ 5500rpm on private road)

I was undecided between them as well.chose the 1.6 and I pick it this Friday.
I wanted te normal diesel but went for the ecomotive because there was a 12 week waitin list for the normal 1600 apparently.

I've had my 1.6 TDI SE copa for a couple of months now. Just got to the end of the 3rd tank of Fuel today and got 600 miles from it. Got about 560 out of the first two tanks. Mixed driving, without really concentrating on driving economically. Noticed 1 active re-gen in the time I've had it. So far no problems, I'm happy and it's a nice car to drive. Was previously running a Renaultsport Clio 197 cup and a Vectra 3.0 CDTI. Was costing too much between me and the mrs to run them, so traded in the thirsty clio for the Leon and kept the Vec. The Leon is doing the Job it was bought for and I'm loving the huge gaps between tank fills.
