I have a 1.6 CR TDI Ecomotive with just over 4000 miles on it.

Driving around 70mph with a full tank and boot, it will pull about 45-50mpg, and about 55mpg when it has around 1/3 tank or less. At 60mph with the same load, it does around 55-60mpg with a full tank, and 65-70mpg with a 1/3 of a tank.

Strangely, I'm getting better economy in the town than on the motorway, driving along at 30-35 in 3rd gear is about 1700-1800 revs and it easily does over 70mpg on a flat road. If you drop it into 4th it'll do around 80mpg at around 1200 revs. However, dropping it to 4th takes it off boost, meaning the mpg is better but if you need to accelerate there is nothing there and you have to drop a gear. If you don't drop a gear, you'll end up getting around the same mpg as if you were on boost anyway. Obviously, with accelerating and breaking, your average drops, but sat at 30 or 40mpg around 1700 revs for a fair while will see your average jump up.

It seems strange to me that my engine is better in urban areas than the motorway, but that's the way it is. Whether it's got something to do with the engine being tight, or the fact it's first 3,500 miles were all town miles (ex demo car) and the ECU hasn't adjusted to my driving yet, I don't know. Overall I'm expecting the mpg to still improve further because the engine is so new.

You can't say you are getting 70-80mpg in town just from reading the realtime display. You need to do it properly by filling up to the brim, resetting the trip computer, driving for a week/whatever then fill up to the brim again and see how many miles you have done on the computer. Then divide the mileage by the fuel used, I guarentee you it won't be 70-80mpg.
I could get a million mpg measuring it your way, just drive to the top of a hill and let it roll down in gear.It won't use any fuel at all but will still be covering distance.
