Hi

I'm new to all this and I'm considering upgrading the stock air filter in my cupra.

Has anyone got any experience of doing this and of the performance gains?

Also any suggestions for which filter would be best is appreciated. I've seen a K&N filter but just wondering if anyone has experience of better alternatives.

In terms of performance gains, don't look for much. Maybe...MAYBE anything from about 2-4hp overall but the best benefit from the filter is response, for mine, everything just feels a little more noticably sharper on the throttle, air pulls in quicker and the turbo feels to spool up a bit quicker, plus what's not to like about a bit of added intake noise? :D. You'd need to before/after dyno it like 3 times each to get a valid figure but it wouldn't be worth doing it's more of a "feel" thing/ They work, and they work well compared to the HUGE stock white filter that came with mine.

Thanks for the reply Kraken. I did a bit of digging on other forums and people were saying oil impregnated filters can make the MAF sensor malfunction. Have you ever had this happen ?

get a piper/ramair. avoid k&N cos of maf.

custom intake setups are easy to make, drop in filters are even easier.

post a pic of your engine bay pls.

I've checked piper and ramair and neither do a filter for the 1.8.

If there was such a huge issue with the MAF sensor, K&N would not exist as a business. I've never experienced or know anyone or really seen any proof/damage caused by an oil filter. It's not designed to "leak" or "drip" into the system otherwise that would be f*cking retarded and K&N and other oiled filter businesses would of been dead long ago. It's very lightly coated, it comes pre done for at least 10k miles, it's easy to install, and clean and re-do. You literally can't f*ck it up unless you are trying to.

@OP i'd say get one, absolutely no issues at all for over a 1000 spirited miles

ive had a maf die, wasnt a cheap maf either, RS4 3" on my 1.8t. i put it down to k&n.

foam filters flow more anyway, and easier to clean.

Sorry to hear that but i've driven a dozen or so vehicles in past jobs all fitted with variations of the "oiled filter" by K&N and all have been well serviced well in time and no issues ever reported relating to them, perhaps you just got unlucky. Even after an old Focus RS with 97K miles on it the chamber was a little dusty, but oily and greasy, not at all. As for what you say with foam, maybe so, but they are less durable in my experience.

Sorry to derail the topic OP but in my honest advice from experience, go for the K&N, you won't regret it :). Plus it's been a bargain on amazon recently.
