Hi guys,
Looking to get a Leon soon, been looking at other Vags too A3/MK5 but the Leon seems to be abit cheaper than those but do they all share the same engines? BKD?

My sister has a A3 2.0 TDI (BKD) and has had afew issues, turbo changed, clutch maybe soonish, so been told to go for the 1.9 TDI instead. Although I have managed 50+ mpg everytime I have driven her car as I sold my 130i which I was getting 32mpg max!

Have a budget around £4-5k...

Can't post URLs so here are 2 from AutoTrader

201409137369553

201409097264813

I am most likely to get either one mapped which would be best? Do they both have DPFs or was that 2.0 only?

Cheers

1.9 is an older and less refined engine, but well proven and reliable. It is the 8v version so 103bhp and 184lbft. Mapped I believe are around 140bhp. We had an mk5 1.9 and it was a good car, but a bit sluggish. No DPF to worry about though.

2.0 is 140bhp and 236lbft and does not have a dpf (I think). There is also a 170bhp 258lbft engine (badged FR). That does have a dpf.

In 2010 the diesels were replaced with common rail units, a 1.6 and two 2.0 again 140 and 170bhp.

If you want maximum reliability and good economy, the 1.9tdi would be a good shout.

I think if you bought a 1.9 you'd regret not going for the 2.0, I've owned both 2.0 variants and the 170bhp BMN engine is definitely the better option, you can pick up a Leon fr mk2 for roughly 5k now if you don't mind buying one with 100k plus miles which is nothing for the engines if they've been looked after correctly.
DPF is a pain but a lot of these cars have already had them removed so you could hit lucky and not have to shell the money out yourself, that's the only real big problem with them.

When did the BMN engine come in? I dont mind over 100k as long as the service history is all upto date and cambelt etc been changed.

BMN is the 170bhp engine which in the Leon is only available in the FR, 2006-2009.
