16 inch wheels on leon for the winter

Hi

I have 18s (225 40 zr 18) on my mk 1 leon fr at the moment but am heading to the alps for the winter and will need to put winter/snow tyres on. To save some money i am planning on putting on the ones from my previous car. They are sized 205 55 r16 i have offered them up and they look as if they will fit ok and with the smaller width should be better in snow.

Can anyone see a problem with putting 16s on and give any advise if they will fit ok etc?

Does anyone have 4 that they want to sell that would fit?

Cheers

If the holes in the wheels match the hub, the center ring in the wheel fits snug over the hub center and the wheels fit over the discs and calipers then there should be no problem with fitting them.

If you do fit them check you can still turn from lock to lock with nothing rubbing and check that nothing is touching and you should be all set.

One more thing to note is that the new wheels will have a marginally larger rolling radius meaning than your speedometer will not be correct. At 60mph (on the speedometer) you will actually be traveling at 60.5mph which is nothing to worry about, just something for you to know.

same as LEE69, i also use 16" in the winter on my LC with 312mm brakes.
and 205/55-16 is the right size.
just make sure, what ever wheels you get that they will fit the car.

Hi guys with the 16 found a lot which fit the pcd size and pitch but the exact offset is proving difficult the Leon wheels I think is 35/38 mostvw an seat 16s are 42et does this matter any help on this would be great

I don't think that little extra offset will change anything on your car to be honest. If they are the correct PCD then I would get them. As you drive an FR then you probably have very wide wheels on it so the narrower wheels with the different offset will balance.

Get some more view but I am pretty sure they will fit. I have alloys which are 225 40 18 with a 45mm offset and they fit fine on my Leon 1.9TDi Se 110hp.

just been out with my 205x 55x16 michelin alpin A4 tyres on in the snow and they are great. Normally run 225 x 45 x17 on the normal cupra tyres.

Slightly off topic anyone have a link to the video put on cupranet last year of the guy driving up the back roads into the snowdrift it was very funny but shows what winter tyres can do.

Any insurance issues with fitting smaller wheels and narrower tyres? Was thinking of downgrading my FR to 16" wheels to improve ride quality, reduce unsprung weight, etc.

Would insurers regard this as making the car less safe, as the original tyres fitted were wider/lower profile?

I doubt insurance companies would care very much as the steel wheels fitted by MarkWales are the standard spare wheels.

SEAT would not supply a spare wheel that does not fulfill the cars safety requirements.

I may be wrong though

I was wondering because my spare is a 16" steelie but, despite being fitted with what looks like a normal Conti tyre, 205/55 size, the label on the wheel still says 80kph maximum speed!

I gather the early Cupras were fitted with 16s with 205/55 tyres on as standard, so I assume I could point this out to the insurers if they had any issues, but technically the FR/Cupra TDI models were not fitted with this tyre/wheel combination so not sure if it would give the insurers an excuse to deny a claim, knowing what they're like...
