Hi,

Was considering purchasing a silver 1.9 TDI Cupra with 93,000 miles on the clock, by the looks of it completely stock.

Just wondered if there is anything I should look out for ?

Is this worth the cost ?

cupra tdi is the pd150? if so service history and cambelt changes are very important as the pd is an engine that needs to be pampered. as for leon bits in general look for low speed fans (turn aircon on while sitting there) these cars like to leak so look for reciepts of door re-seals etc. usual checks to do such as head gasket, squeeze all pipes while car is on check water oil

Is strong money for an 04 but then the pics look good and you expect a slightly inflated price at a garage, also sub 100k mile ones are getting rarer. As said above the pd 150 is a great engine but not if neglected.
Have a good drive, don't be afraid to give it some beans aswell, check for smoke and that it pulls well, leave it running when you get back have another look around giving it time for the temperature to settle.Good tyres aren't cheap these days so check they're all good.
Clutch, flywheel, turbo and timing belt can all be issues with a car this age so check these are Ok or have been changed.

I wouldn't be giving them anymore than £3500 for it if your paying cash.

Good luck mate AL

What are these cars like for fuel economy and reliability ?

Potentially going to be doing a regular 200 mile commute to Carlisle.

I've had my Leon for 18 months exactly and I've only had 1 problem with it in terms of the engine and it was an intercooler hose, the metal clip connection set up on some of the hoses gives up after a while due to wear on the aluminum bits on the end of the hose. In my opinion is a bad design so not really a reliability issue.

Apart from that I've only done servicing, mot and tyres.

Oh yeah and replaced a broken coil spring which wasn't cheap as it was s dealer only part.

My wife had a mk4 golf gt tdi 130 for 6 years and an intercooler hose again was the only problem she ever had

I love the 1.9pd engine and as I said above if it's looked after it should serve you well.

I've just sold ma mk4 gt tdi 130 and a am looking for another Leon tdi.

Yeah defo mate, my Leon fr doesn't do amazing mpg but the wife only does 10-30 mile journeys so that to be expected, it's still averaging about 45 but that's with 200bhp and 314ft/lb from the remap so don't mind.

Never really been on a long run in the Leon but the golf tdi 130 went on a few long runs and regularly went above 60mpg, the asv 130 bhp is supposed to be the best all round engine for power and economy though but on a 200 mile commute the 150 should do well.

Unfortunately gonna be off to Carlisle around 8 times a month, with other local commutes from Teesside to Durham and Newcastle thrown in between.

They say the average is 12, 000 a year so that's around double but it won't be a problem for that car.

I try to use the other car for long trips to keep the mileage down on the fr, it usually only does 400-500 a month but more at the moment cos I'm still looking for a replacement for the golf.

ive got a pd150 and am more than happy with the MPG, regularly staying in the high 50's with cant be bad! especially considering its got enough poke to go with it as well. it's a nice happy medium in my opinion. I couldn't be happier with mine, love it to pieces, even though ive just had to pay for the clutch haha!(although the opportunity was taken to upgrade anyway in preparation for a cheeky remap to come)
