Granted I've not heard my car from the outside properly, other than my wife driving it off the drive. But my manual 2016 290 doesn't seem to make any exhaust sound, no pops no bangs. I've tried some spirited driving to get the exhaust nice and hot, take it over 5k and let off, or change gear, and nothing.

I saw a 66 plate cupra (not sure if 290 or 300) drive by the other day and it was making some nice noises as it was slowing down, didn't seem too over the top, so not sure if they did a res delete or not. Heard it again today as it took off down the road and it was DSG farting, so maybe it's a gearbox thing?

I'm reluctant to do a res delete as I can't stand motorway drone. Any ideas? Or just put up.

Knowing nothing about this, I'm going to suggest it is a DSG only thing.
It might be a WLTP thing, judging by comments from owners of performance Golfs on some of the Golf forums; post-WLTP performance Golf’s with DSG seem to be lacking in pops and bangs compared to pre-WLTP examples.

I am going to presume the other cupra you heard had a res delete or another exhaust mod... a lot of people want more noise without drone at motorway speed, but unfortunately, if you want the car to make more noise, it makes more noise.

On another note, I have res deleted my last 2 cupra' s and have never found it too loud on the motorway aslong as the soundaktor thing is off.

As SRGTD said, I could be to do with the wltp regulation, over heard the latest models don't pop as much, but couldn't comment as I dotn know, as far as I'm aware manual or DSG they will still pop on lift off?

Maybe do a res delete and keep the resonator, and If you don't like it put it back in ?

WLTP would not affect the OP's car, WLTP is from 68plate (not all 68 but some) onwards, i have a 2019 Cupra which is a WLTP model and ive not been in any cupras that are pre WLTP so not sure how loud they are but ive done 1400miles in my 19 now and the dsg farts on upshift are fairly loud and it pops and bangs loads on over run, car needs to be put into sport or cupra mode every time the engine is started though as there is no pops or bangs in comfort mode

For the pops and crackles on downshift you need to be in cupra mode otherwise you won’t get any.

Also it may be quite faint, too faint to hear inside but open the windows and park against a wall and rev it in comfort then cupra mode and you’ll hear the difference.

My 280 has a double res delete but from standard the 290s sounded far better so hopefully you notice a difference.

Thanks for the replies. I used to have a WRX fully decat, and I could listen to that rumble all day on the motorway. I then got a Clio 200 and put in a catback and centre decat, and the drone on the motorway was unbearable. So you can understand my dilemma about getting a res delete.

But I understand that it's possible to put the resonator back in relatively easily.

Mine is a 66 plate so I don't think it's WLTP. Anyone got a diagram of the exhaust on a 2016 Cupra?

Don't suppose you've got any videos of yours now that there are some miles on it? All videos I see on Youtube seem to be brand new cars but I'm wanting to know what the exhaust is like after some miles

I've got a 2016 manual Cupra. Mine would make quite a loud bang/crack when shifting gears under hard acceleration between 4k and 5k rpm. This was intermittent though and would generally only do it after some more sedate driving then suddenly accelerating hard. I've since had a res delete carried out and is a good bit louder and you can now hear the pops and bangs on the overrun in Cupra mode. My res delete drones at around 3k rpm but its relatively civilised below this rpm.

So I've spent a few weeks trying to see what's going on here, and I can now hear some nice little pops! Some things I've done:
  • Disabled soundaktor - can now hear exhaust itself
  • Individual mode - engine set to Cupra (or whatever the sportiest setting is for the engine), I guess Cupra mode would be the same.
  • Press the mode button on every start up
  • Recently switched to 99 RON fuel, currently using Tesco Momentum
  • Rear seats down, windows up, radio down
  • Drive on a quiet, smooth road
  • Drive at ridiculous RPMs in an unsuitable low gear :cheeky:
From practically cold, I can now hear a quick succession of quiet pops, kinda like someone quickly popping bubble wrap - in certain conditions! As well as the above list, these pops are most apparent in 1st gear, if you take it to 4k or above and let it drop below 3k revs. Doing the same, you can just about hear it in 2nd, but at this point, the road noise is too loud and almost completely drowns it out. When the car is warmer and driven more spiritedly, I can now hear a crack or two when changing gear, but not always.

Now, I'm not sure if this is because of any of the variables in the list above, or I've simply tuned my hearing to pick these noises up now. I've also wondered why some people report their stock manual 290s making lots of noise like this and some, like me, couldn't hear anything. My current theory is that the budget tyres on the rear of my car are contributing massively to road-noise, practically drowning any other noise out, but I know these Leons suffer from tyre roar quite badly.

Some of you might be thinking, who cares, manufactured pops and bangs are fake and sound ridiculous. Yeah I kinda agree, but at the same time I think these noises make the driving experience that little bit more enjoyable, at least for me. I was considering a res delete, but I really didn't want the drone, or for the exhaust and pop/bangs to be obnoxious. I was also genuinely interested in why my car didn't seem to make any noise!

I’ve got a 66 plate 290 Cupra ST BE and mine doesn’t make much of a noise compared to some other stock Cupra’s that I’ve seen videos of. Not sure what dictates that or wether it’s a model specific thing or not?

Oh really? Didn’t know that. I wonder why that is. Doesn’t make me love the car any less, but sometimes wouldn’t mind the extra grunt
