Can anyone confirm if the brake pads are the same as on ebay they are the same and other forums say the same but dave@sere says not and are different part numbers????

Im looking at upgrading to the 312mm but if their the same pads then I cant see much point as all im doing is putting heavier discs on

I'd be very interested to hear about the difference between the 288/312 pads. The calipers are identical (as far as I can tell) so I'd guess that the only likely difference between the pad sets would be material rather than dimensional.

Hopefully someone knows and will put me/us out of our misery soon.

Different pads on 312 mate

wrong...they ARE the same pads I did the test on my own car. 312 and 288mm use the exact same pad, part number etc etc. I took pads from a 2012 MK6 GTI and put them on my 2012 Leon FR 1.8tsi with 288 discs.

It's not just about the pads, it's about the extra leverage and bigger heatsink provided by the larger discs.

exactly, the reason 312 is a better brake system than the 288mm version is that...even though they use the same pad

So are they the same callipers? obviously with different carrier's, and why do people say they're the same pads?

Yes, calipers are the same, the only 2 differences between 2 two systems are obviously discs and the carriers. Everything else is identical.

For the pads I found on some websites like demon tweeks that 288mm take 146x54x19 pads and 312mm take 156x71x20 so should have a bigger pad

This upgrade is worth it, yes..your discs are going to be like 10-15% heavier but its nothing your car can´t handle with out you even noticing.

Since you will be using the same caliper and pad..the "bite" will be the same, where the 312mm system will beat the 288, is fade resistance, due to a larger (almost 10%) surface.

Those discs along with a better brake fluid (ate super blue for instance) and good pads will make a looot of difference. If you only upgrade discs, you will feel the difference but wont be as dramatic as the other scenario.

Alright, lets ask ETKA:

312 by 25mm vented front discs - Brakepad part number: 3C0698151C :

288 by 25mm vented front discs - Brakepad part number: still 3C0698151C:

Really mate, I did the test on my car and they do fit. I went to the dealer and they also gave me only 1 part number, bought them and installed them on my car.

On both images you can also see the caliper part number, its the same for both systems.

Its more that I want a bit more bite as at the moment if I was to brake harshly it seems to take an age to stop and the abs doesn't even kick in. And I was going to change pads on my current setup but from what ive heard oem are the best for street use, so if the 312mm setup doesn't have bigger pads its a waist of time as im not tracking the car and as of yet haven't had brake fade.

Dave@sere says 312mm pads are 5K0 698 151 and 288mm are 3C0 698 151C

Really? thats odd, I looked that part number on ETKA (the 5K0 you gave me) and it does match as a brake pad set with wear sensor but the one I see bundled with the 312 and 288 mm brake systems is 3C0 698 151C for both. hum...

The dealership gave me the 3C0 for my car and they did fit, when I used the pads from my friends GTI (312 discs) they also fitted...strange..

As the calipers are the same there is no reason why the pads for a 288mm disc shouldn't fit and work with the 312mm disc , however to get the best out of the 312 disc the larger pads would be required.

That makes sense...so...basically, both pads fit both rotors but larger pads will work even better on a 312 rotor right?

As above, the caliper and pad is the same for both setups. All that has to change is the carrier and disc. No caliper removal or brake bleeding necessary.

How do i know this? I did it on my old mk5 Golf years ago and on our Altea last weekend.

The 312 disc gives a nicer bite, very subtle but it's there.

Edit: just to confirm again, the pads on a 288 and 312 factory setup are the same size!

The Altea didn't have wear indicator loom present, could explain the part number difference.

It should di, as on the sizes quoted earlier the pads have more surface area. Just increasing rotor/disc size from 288 to 312 may improve things for the reasons described earlier, certainly using the bigger pads should see a noticeable improvement.
