Banana Leon

Guest
Hi all,

The blowers on my banana (Crono Yellow 1.9 Tdi) smell awful when they are on.
Its a smelly stale rotton socks smell.

Its fine when the air con is on.

I have changed the pollen filter which seemed to make the smell go away for a week and now its back!

What do i need to do to kill it please?

Cheers

You need an air con system cleaner, sometimes call an air con bomb.

Many of these on eBay...

Easy to use, set the air con to it's coldest setting and to recirculate - then set the cleaner off and close all doors and windows. Allow to 'cook' for 10 mins or so until you eliminated all the smelly bugs living in your air con.

The OP says it's fine with the aircon on, but I would still get it serviced if it was mine. A few years ago I had Meriva and it's aircon smelt really bad, like manure or some other awful farmyard smell. The bugs in that system actually made me ill. I had a throat infection that took months to get rid of even after antibiotics. The more time I spent in the car, the worse I got. Really not nice and I make sure that my aircon is serviced every year now!

2 things...

1. assume you shouldnt be in the car during this!?

2. arent you in danger of the battery dying with the air con blasting for 10mins?

thanks guys, and yes i do have the spare.....

guess what i'll be doing this weekend then!!:D

try a new pollen filter too (if these have them??? bit of a useless post if u have sorted the problem, but helps towards my post count ;) ) hehe

Sorry to dig up my old thread

but i am at my wits end with this now........

I have had the car at Seat Garage 4 times for this problem over the last 2 months -

Work done

Air Con Smoke bomb - didnt sort
Another smoke bomb plus cleaning foam run through the vents - not sorted
2 new pollen filters - not sorted
Replaced a kinked pipe in a pipe that is under the driver foot rest rest next to clutch pedal - sorted for 3 weeks then smell back

Garage basically think im mad and say there is nothing wrong with the car.

The smell is of stale, stagnant water, damp, wet smelly socks, fishy.

It only ever happens when i have the blowers on low and when the temp is set to LO.
It DOES NOT smell at all when the air-con is on (not that the garage listen to this, and every time they test it they say the air con has been on and nothing can be smelt)

There is no pattern to when it smells, or how often, i can months without smelling it, then it will come along, i turn the blowers off and by the next day/few days it can be gone.

So im now at a point of the garage saying all we can do is next time it smells drive it accross to us (40 mins away is my nearest garage)

Does anybody have any idea on what it can be please?
Seat Master Tech is stumped, and im basically being made out as a liar now.

Thanks

All I could suggest is to run 2-3 bombs through it one after another, Just so you know, whenever you set the temperature to LO, the air-con will be on, unless you have econ selected.

Apart from that you could check the under bonnet soundproofing for mould - and take it off if need be. I've run mine without it for over 3 years, also maybe check around the air intake for rotting leaves?

They need to be doing the air con debug with the pollen filter removed (probably haven't been). try doing it yourself, get the car hot with the heaters blasting out hot, then take out pollen filter put lid back on pollen filter housing set blowers to 22 degrees and do the debug as per instructions.

I remember I drive through a big puddle on a country road once(unavoidable).
And the water got in the engine bay and stunk the car out of horse **** everytime I put the blowers or air con on.
Try cleaning your engine bay, that might work

Another possibility is the washer bottle, this is a common problem on a MK2 Focus with the very smell you are describing, apparently it is caused by using cheap brand screen wash or stagnant water in the bottle, very simple to resolve by emptying the bottle via the washers then filling up with a strong mix of good quality screen wash and empty again via the washers. This used to fix the problem every time.

If i've been using my aircon, and then turn the aircon off, but leave the normal fans running, i then get a horrible damp musty smell coming through the cabin for a couple of minutes.

Is there anything i can do to stop this? It happens every time i have used the aircon!

Maybe someone has stuffed a sock I'm your vents as a joke :-D
