hello,
just had a search but couldnt find what i was after....
ordered some 8000k HIDS and are gettin fitted ovr the weekend....just need a few questions answered..

how easy is it to fit the whole conversion yourself?, i am really dumb with electrical stuff....i am kinda thinking i should of fitted them myself...

the 8000k will be a lot more whiter, brighter light than a 6000k i imagine?

will the full conversion include the side lights or just main beam?

maybe should of asked these things when i booked it in..lol..

thanks

8000k will put less light on the road than say 6000k which is what most people go for, happy medium between good looks and still being able to see where your going, higher the temperature the less light output.

8000K will give you a very blue/purple light which will be very bad for night driving. Lower the K rating brighter the lights. Most people fit 4500K or 6000K lights. I have a funny feeling 8000K lights are for off road use only because of the low light quality ( standard bulbs would be better ) and the light given off is to blue which your not allowed blue headlights. Could be wrong about the legal thing but 8000K lights will be crap to drive with as a friend had a set on his car for a few days before taking them off.

Having 8000K lamps will make you likely get you a lot more agrrovation from the police - you may also struggle to get them through the MOT. If you have the option, I'd exchange for 6000K versions

Yep, i've got 6000k in my dipped and main, and they are quite blue, any bluer and the police would pay a lot of attention i think! With regards to fitting, 30 mins a side and a very simple job. You need a good place to mount the ballasts, drill a 23mm (i think) hole in the bulb access cover, fit the bulbs and plug it all together (colour coded plugs for simplicity); and enjoy :) there are a couple of guides on here i think; if not the instructions with the conversion kits off ebay are sufficient.

Had a customer who wanted HIDs fitted. Brought a 6000k kit. Very easy to fit but even 6000k is quite blue. May be go a 4500k kit. would have a brighter whiter light for night dring. Would only recommend fitting to dipped cos main beam needs to be instant and HIDs are not. Take a few seconds to warm up to correct lighting.

6k here too and if I had the opportunity I would have bought 4300k.

As long as the 8k's are more white than blue you'll be ok at MOT time.

that is a very true point about the hids not being instant. i have to do long flashes now to let people out or what-not. but i live in the country-side and they make such a difference when hammering it down country lanes so worth it for me, not suitable for everyone.

Any hid kit is at 1000% better than any "standard" bulbs even PIAA!

Not got any mates with HIDS fitted so you can see ( no pun intended) them working?

I'd never have a car without them now.

I agree, I'd be surprised if 8000k is worse than standard halogen. I have 6000k and have done on most of my cars with aftermarket HIDs. Standard fit on high spec cars is around 4300k with the projector in the headlamp adding the colour that you see from afar. As we don't have projectors we need 6000k to have any noticeable colour in the light. (Obviously you don't NEED this - it jus looks good)

If you've bought the 8000k kit and it's non refundable, I would get it fitted (or do it yourself) at worse case you can buy the bulbs on their own in the right fitment and 6000k or 4300k colours.

The kits are very simple to fit the hardest part is working out where to place the ballasts – it is designed for non technical type people and is 'plug and play'. The wires are coloured for guidance but you really don't need any.

You could always just plug one side in and see how you like the colour before fixing them. If you were local I'd offer to give you a hand.

Also, the 'kit' doesn't normally include side lights. You would have to buy LED bulbs for those to match.

I had 10000K on my old Stilo and even they were indefinately better than any halogen bulb. Can't say I had any bother from the police either but they may be more easy going around here than anywhere else. Was a great blue/"purpley" colour though!:funk: When I eventually pull my finger out, I think I'll be opting for 8000K on the Leon.

as for the fitting side of things they are a piece of piss !

You need a 20mm hole saw and arbor to cut the back of the cover for the wires to the ballasts to pass through

fit the new HID bulb into the bulb holder and plug the spade connectors into the relevant holes in the orginal OE wiring loom and that's them done.

The hardest place is finsing a home for the ballast boxes, if you want to hide them otherwise you can just bolt them to the edge where the front panel and the inner wing meet there is a bolt there you can undo and bolt the bracket, that should come in the kit, too and your done !

Very easy.

Here's where i put my ballasts

off side is hiden behind the washer bottle

near side is inbetween the battery and standard air intake

cheers mate great advice..

just a bit worried they arent going to be bright enough, have seen a front view of them, and they dont look that much whiter than standard obviously the priority is what u can see from behind the wheel..i just think the 6000k may be better....

why dont many modding places sell 6000k now?

I have 6k and if I had the choice again I think I'd personally true the 4500/4300, mine are a touch too blue for me.
