hi there

i've had my car for 4 years now but have changed the rear bearings 3 times as the last few MOTs have all failed me on play. today i changed them again and was just seeing if anyone has any advice about why they could be getting damaged so quickly.

There is a nut that holds all the bearings in and was wondering if this needs to to be tight or loose (the split pin holds everything in so i was thinking it should be loose)

any help on this matter would be much appreiciated

many thanks

i got a 1.4s, 99 on a T plate mate and ive had mine 10 yrs now and i reckon im on my 6th set of bearings! ive no idea why they go or if there is a problem. i get my bearings from G.S.F, £7 a pop. ive heard of other folk changing them alot aswell so i dont think its much to worry about.

oh and the nut that holds the bearing on needs to be just abit more than finger tight! just nick it up with a spanner, go for a good drive to bed it in then tighten it up a touch more!

That nut is what effectively holds your wheel on, as it holds your hub on, which runs on your wheel bearing. You need to tighten it up with the wheel on if this is possible, tighten it up while spinning the wheel when you feel the wheel go tight due to you putting load on the bearing, you need to back it off a touch, then fit the locking device, I dont know whether it has split pins or lockng washers. the nut should definately not be loose, but not too tight other wise the bearing will wear prematurely. When you replace your wheel bearings did you look at the old one for signs of heat, blue metal, this can be caused by incorrect fitting or poor quality bearings. hope this helps.

I did mine recently and was surprised how loose the hub nut needed to be compared to other cars I've had which have all had a torque setting for the nut. The Ibiza set up may leave a bit of play in the bearing causing faster wear, don't know why though... The process George details is how I expect to do them but leaves the nut too tight according to the Haynes book of lies. May stop wear but could have bad side effects, depends why Seat designed it that way!

Neil, I did mine in about 45 mins a side. I know what I'm doing but have a tendency to faff, so if you're reasonably competent & don't stop for tea too often you should be able to do it quicker :) Oh, it helps to have a socket or similar large round object to hammer the new bearings into place evenly.
