you can do it using either an amplifier that accepts high level inputs, (so you put speaker wire to amp rather than using pre outs). or using a high to low converter, (takes speaker wire signal and reduces to a low level signal for amps).
Unfortuantly the quality will not be as good as using pre outs from the headunit direct, but using the high to low conveter may allow better quality than high level inputs to the amp. (depending on wire quality etc).

are you intending to upgrade any of the speaker wire? If you are then id say upgrade the head unit otherwise its alot of work that would be compromised by the headunit.

However if not, the Blaupunkt system in post #3 appears a great little product and allows you to use an ipod as well :)

ive used aline out converter [about £10 ebay] which i joined into the speaker cables behind head unit this gives you a controlled 2x rca output to run your amps nice and easy sounds good to with subs and oem upgraded speakers chris
