has anyone tried an aftermarket Head Up Display?
Recently test drove a car with a HUD, quite liked it, so thought about giving one a try. There are LOADS available on eBay, wondering if anyone has any experience of them.

Which car / HUD was it? I'm also interested. But don't want something that's a pain to take in and out of the car. Plus on the MK2, the dash is curved, so a pain to stick anything to. Although I know @theoldboy has one that seems quite nifty. But I would like a permanent projector like one I think I've seen in one of the upper range Audis.

@theoldboy lets see some pics, I was toying with one for the 280 just to get a nicer KMH while in France. Easier now with the VC.

You should off all had a look at it when you were at the meet at doncaster.
Afraid car is in the garage for a week maybe two so cant take pics.

My investigations found that there are various VW HUD Units but they needed the top of the dash to be cut and (based on a passat thread i read) needed a lot of space behind all the stuff that is already there so I decided against trying to retrofit an existing one. I further also read that on the Audi and some VW you needed different windscreen as the reflective part is in the glass.
Not saying any of this is true just at that point i went nah to much hassle.

What I have done is bought a cheap and cheerful phone holder / hud unit
index.php

I am running Torque Pro (which supports HUD) and some Navi Software that also supports HUD (Google dont yet) and so far its worked very well in both daylight and nightime, I also got a windscreen wrapper that you can hud against but not found the need to play with that yet.

For me it was about Oil, Water and Boost that I wanted for when I was on the track but cant do that with this setup as the phone is not tied down so not allowed (in case you roll the car you dont want a mobile phone flying around inside the car) so looking for old fationed guages.

Sadly you'd scampered off by the time my food arrived and I got back outside lol

Well I am now able to go to the National meet so if you are there you can have a look at that and the suspension.

I'm sure I saw one where you don't have to user your phone... but it was obv much more expensive. Plus, I'd still have to take it out of the car everytime in case some thieving :censored: decided to help themselves.

You can buy these with Wireless charging case as well so that you charge the phone off the cradle while using the HUD.

Car data is all bluetooth but there are wireless dongles availiable.

I have seen a guy in Ausy get various bits of software so that you put in a old phone without a sim and it starts up when the ignition is on and goes straight to the software you want, What I will look at in time is replacing the speaker grill I have on the top of my dashboard and use that to hide the phone and automate it to just start up, but thats all in the future along with automating OBD11 via software.....

No but its the same principle, Use OBD Connection (either wired or bluetooth) to talk to the car and display the output on your windscreen.

The reason I went Phone is simply because there are lots of different software options you can use to make your own screens with.

Word of warning with the Chinese obd ones. I bought the kkmoon one off Amazon and after about a fortnight messing round trying to get it to work, sent it back. I guess it has to read the right bytes from the port and universal doesn't mean compatible.

An if I have read it correctly the one you put up as an example uses a cable from the device to your OBD Port so check how long it is.
