hi guys,

ive recently had a panel filter and downpipe fitted and now Im getting a very strange air rushing/whistling noise on gear shifts (DSG so it cuts the throttle). I cant reproduce it in-gear, only happens during shifts.

it almost sounds like its recirculating the air but its really loud/sounds like its leaking almost? no loss of power, holds boost fine and turbo sounds fine. sometimes the noise lasts a while and the car would hesitate for a second or 2.

i have a rev d diverter valve so i dont think its a split diaphragm.. and its holding boost so i dont think its a boost leak. just a very strange noise - mechanic says its normal due to the way recirculating valves work but ive never had this before. no forge spacer fitted either.

any ideas? i hope i explained it well. its basically the same sound as a really bad/long dump valve except more metallic and hollow.

cheers

From when the panel filter was fitted is the engine cover hooked back together properly at the rear? This would cause you to hear the recirc coming back to the intake pipe.
I have a downpipe and panel filter on mine and don't hear any recirc noise.

all the pipes are hooked up correctly, had the engine cover off and nothing seems wrong. cant reproduce it unless im moving so very hard to figure out where the noise is coming from.

as for the noise being normal - i never had it before, not this loud anyway. you can hear the turbo spooling up fine, it sounds like the usual light whistling so i dont think its that. i doubt the panel filter made the noise increase this much? I may put the standard air filter back on as the panel filter has netted me a total gain of -2bhp lol.

edit: and for comparison, the turbo spool noise is about a 1-2 on a scale of 10 while this rushing noise is more like a 7-8 (depending on speed/revs). im trying to find the noise on youtube but im not having much luck.

air rushing/squealing/dump valve noise

hi guys,

ive recorded a video now. the first squeal is around 22 seconds in.. then theres 2 big ones at 40 and 1:25... i only managed to catch short lasting ones, but sometimes this noise sounds more of a rush rather than a squeal and can last for up to 2-3 seconds.

ive put subtitles for when they happen so you dont miss them.. dont forget to turn volume up as its a bit difficult to catch sometimes. video quality is set to low but audio should be good.

p.s. this was filmed within legal speed limits on a quiet-ish road!

thanks for any help!

Well I change my opinion it's like a high pitch squeal doubt the filter would cause that but to be sure try it with original see what happens

Well I'd still say that the engine cover isn't hinged together properly at the rear or the panel filter is not sealing properly as that's the same noise you get from a open air induction kit.

ive just checked all the connectors/pipes on the airbox/engine cover and it seems to be hinged on fine.

could it be a split pipe somewhere? the reason I describe it as a air rushing noise is because 90% of the time it doesnt squeal, it sounds more like air escaping through a metal straw.

any other things I can check? the noise is starting to annoy me as Im noticing it even more now
