Hi,

Re: Alhambra 2.0 1998 auto petrol

Ive been having problems with my car not starting, turning over and not firing, i had the coil and dizzy cap/rotor arm changed, it was fine for a week.

Then yesterday after a short trip, i got in it and tried to start it, it just turned over without firing, then turned the key and nothing happened.

Then it started to lock itself, on and on it went, i left for a while, and it started!!

I've investigated everything i can possibly think of?

Where is the immobiliser module, ive heard its behind the dial, if i get to it, what can i do with it?

Can it be removed and bypassed?

Im just about ready to drive it over a cliff, well that is if itll start!!!

Thanks,

Paul

check that no water is getting under passenger seat as that is where the central locking electrics are. could be cause of immobiliser probs as they are all linked i think

Hi.

I'm having similar problems. When we bought the car the alarm / central locking didn't work. I didn't need it so wasn't concerned. Driving home one day in the pouring rain 60 mph and the engine cut out. Never to start again.

It seems the passenger footwell had become wet from a leak behind the bulkhead and I am told that is where the Central locking ECU is located. Obviously water and computers equal weird problems and in my case the immobiliser has cut in permanently.

The car is worth less than 2K being on a 'R' plate. I now have a perfectly good car that is unuseable. Does anyone know how to bypass the ECU / immobiliser?

I know this doesn't help you but I would like to share the patent design fault with others as I've now heard of six similar problems, not including yours.

The immobiliser and the central locking are two different circuits and ECU's the immobiliser ECUis up under the dash the alarm / central locking ECU on pr98 models is under the passenger seat in the storage hole
if it's dry? I would check the condition of the door looms where they pass from the A-B posts to the doors and to the rear hatch (rubber belows driver side) the cables are known to fail and possibly short out causing odd behaivour with the locking system  as for the starting problem? possible relay 20/30 cant remember which one? these are are another known problem! the relay contact burn out and stick open!

Hi,

Im still having problems with this !!!

It just turns over now not even attempting to fire, after its turned over for a while and leave the ignition on, it makes 4 audible bleeps, this is a new thing, and it sounds like its coming from the fuse box, when you say relay 20/30 where would i find them? behind the fuses? if so, it looks like a swine to get to them..........
Beginning to think i made a mistake buying it!:(

Ok, where would i find the crankshaft sensor my freind?
Thank you for your help...........

After having periods of running rough mine now does exactly the same including the beeps, after I'd cleaned the plugs/distributor cap etc - I seem to have 'revealed' the fault and made it permanent!

VAG-COM reported (before total failure and now!)

Code:
Address 01: Engine
   Controller: 037 906 025 S
   Component: SIMOS 4S 2172
   Coding: 00000
   Shop #: WSC 01236
1 Fault Found:
00515 - Camshaft Position (Hall) Sensor (G40)
            16-10 - Signal Outside Specifications - Intermittent
Readiness: N/A

I guess the sensor is the points subsitute in the distributor - but can't find it as a separate part no anywhere - is this a replacement/recon distributor job?

99 2.0 ALHAMBRA

PS I've also had a puddle under the passenger seat before - there's a push join in the rear wash pipes, when nozzle freezes...

Hi,

At long last the problem has been resolved, it turned out it was indeed the Fuel pump relay, that one with 30 on it.

After a while trying to get to it, i removed the cover from the relay, and noticed the arm wasnt kicking in when turning over the engine, tap it with your finger and hey presto fired up!!!

I also noticed it remained in contact when the ignition was turned off for a while, then released, still unconvinced, i ran around in it for a week, helping the relay out when it didnt start.

Got a new one now,(£10) and for 3 weeks its not failed to start, i also noticed if it didnt start first time until i flicked the relay, the auto transmission played up, but to remedy this, it was a quick ignition off and on again, i would imagine this reset something.

Anyway, i hope this helps out someone else one day.

Thanks again chaps.
