Hello, I am a newbie here and new to seat cars. Just picked up a 2010 altea, went for the ecomotive to save on fuel, tax etc, very pleased with it so far, except that the mpg is way lower than expected.

On the way home from the dealers (70 on motorway then 50 on a roads) was getting around 50mpg. Around the local roads (hilly 30 and 40 roads) getting around 41mpg.

We used to drive a skoda fabia 1.9 sdi and regularly got 55mpg average.

The new car is much quicker and quieter, so I could just be driving with more revs than I need, but any advice on what others get would be great.

Is it due a service? What diesel is in the tank, avoid supermarket crap, they are cheap for a reason.
Check pressure in tyres/ tread on them, go over the basics you may find your answer?
High mileage?

Just serviced by seat dealer, got texaco diesel in at the moment, tyres are at correct pressure, got 36k on the clock.

To be honest I don't have accurate figures yet, going to brim it and record mileage. All figures are from the computer so far, which I know are not always right.

The Altea and the Fabia are very different beasts. There's over 200Kgs extra weight in the Altea for a start and that all needs to be hauled about all the time, and of course this adds to the fuel use. After that, various other factors will come in to play, such as wheel/tyre combinations, mileage differences (they all loosen up over time), and unfortunately the Altea has a large shape to push through the air which will also lose you some mpg.

It's a nice car the Altea, but it's not going to win any prizes in fuel efficiency I'm afraid.

Hi Elcap

I too have a 2010 Altea xl 1.6tdi ecomotive and have been concerned with the low mpg.
In fact I also seem to be getting around 41mpg and I thought that I would be getting a lot better mpg.

Haven't yet started to investigate it yet however i was planning on getting the car jacked up and checking how well the wheel turn, i.e. are they turning freely or is there any resistance that could be caused by the brakes.

I'm sure i read somewhere on this forum that it could be a cause for low mpg.

Anyway I'd be intersted to see how you get on and when I get some spare time I will report my findings.

Good luck!!!

May be because the engine is soo small, and the car being soo heavy the car is having to work hard to gain speed, especially if there's a full load?

All good suggestions thank you. I am aware that the Altea is a big car, I am just surprised at how far off actual MPG figures differ from the quoted ones, how can car manufacturers get away with it?

I drove it last night with fuel efficiency in mind and with very gentle acceleration I was heading towards 55+mpg, so maybe its down to driving style.

I did boot it recently up a long hill just to see what sort of power it had and I was very pleasantly surprised at how it got it up to speed. I know that that won't help!
