Another problem with my pd140 tdi! (turbo related)

After all the great help and suggestions on the thread regarding my car shaking under load (which turned out to be a worn inner CV joint) I thought i'd be cheeky and come back for a bit more help  seeing as this is one of the few forums with genuinely knowledgeable members!

For a few months i've noticed something strange with my car....between 1500 and just over 2000 rpm the car can be a bit hesitant, and when it stutters you can hear the turbo (?) make a noise every time it jerks. The noise sounds a bit like a hiss/whirring noise.

The car makes the noise in sync with the car jerking at low revs. Above 2000 revs the is no hesitation and no noise.

It also makes the same noise if I give it full throttle up to about 3000 rpm and then come off the throttle suddenly, its the same sound but a different pattern - like the 'chatter' you hear from some turbos, but it sounds rougher if that makes sense. It only does this in gears 1-3.

Sorry for the long post and I hope it makes sense but any advice/people experiencing a similar problem would be great, especially some troubleshooting pointers to try and diagnose it.

Thanks in advance!

Sounds very similar to what mine does - when cold it can often jump a bit as I leave our village up a (very) slight hill in 3rd gear ~30mph. I've often thought to myself that it was sometime a bit hesitant when at 1500-2000 also, but never thought anything much of it as it's fine for 95% of the time!

It does seem to 'woo' a bit too at low speeds, but nothing too bad and you can hear it more in the cabin than outside the car.

Also does the 'kckcr' noise, as I call it, you describe

How would I go about unplugging my EGR sssstew? Would a diagnostics device show any errors, as I had it plugged in a couple of weeks ago and all it gave was a glow plug fault and nothing else.

mine does this too! it also coughs up a load of blue/grey smoke during the hesitation!

i have found that my egr is spewing out loads of oil through the small breather hole in the front. the intercooler pipes are filling up with oil! this is either coming from the top of the engine or the turbo!

i have disconnected my breather on the top of the engine and the problem is still happening! i am taking the turbo of on monday to send it back to get new bearings and oil seals!

fingers crossed that its the turbo causing my problems! if not i am going to b truly baffled!

Haha I love your spelling of the noise...its so hard to describe isnt it. It doesnt sound like air though it sounds like a faint grinding, is yours the same? The closest sound I can think of is the sound a car makes in reverse gear, but in the pattern of the 'wastegate chatter' you hear in some of the jap cars etc (I couldn't explain it any better than that!)

I had a new EGR a few months ago and it made no difference so I wouldnt count on that, I have had a diagnostics machine hooked up and that didnt show up any fault codes either.

Really looking forward to finding out what the problem is!

Nafo - on your PD150 you should see the N18 EGR Control Valve on the back firewall i think from memory, next to the N75. But easiest to just unplug the vacuum hose that goes into the EGR valve at the back left of the engine.

Im going to give this a go too, even though I replaced my EGR a few months ago for an unrelated problem but thinking about it the noise has only been an issue lately so it well worth a try, thanks.

Mine makes this noise (Ibiza cupra tdi with cc1). It started with a police siren noise 8k miles ago which has got louder and louder, then the noise spoken about about started. More notice when backing off the accelerator quickly. Kind of like a dump valve but an awful metallic chattering sound.

Had it looked at yesterday and they believe a blade/fin (whatever you call them) on the turbo has broken off causing the balance to be thrown off so when the turbo slows down quickly it creates this noise.

Car's done 69k (61k with the CC1 map) so it's likely the turbo on mine if fooked. Looking at £1k apparently for new one fitted.

I was starting to worry the sound was coming from the gearbox so its really reassuring to hear others are having the same problem.

After showing the sound to a friend tonight ive noticed that its really bad when you go into a high gear at a low speed (eg 20mph in 4th) and floor it to around 2000-2500 and suddenly let off its makes the noise really noticeable.

Thanks for all the replies so far guys :)
