Those drivers installed ok (no blue screen) but all i get when plugged into the car is 'no response form controller'. This still a driver issue?

No, now you need to go into Device manager (control panel, system, hardware)

Then find the cable, and choose a COM port of 1-4 that's free.

Then set it in Vag-com

The cable shows up as 'USB Serial Converter' in device manager. Under the USB Controllers tab. How do i tell it what port to use? Just checked, the drivers you linked to didnt work for me, the only driver i can find that wont crash my system is this one: http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm Don't know if that helps.

I ordered the same cable and had a hell of a time making the damm cable work. Got there eventually though.

If u have downloaded and installed any duff drivers, u need to uninstall them using the uninstall program that came with the duff drivers. The mistake i was doing was just uninstalling the drivers from Device Manager and/or windows add/remove programs section. This is not good enough. you need to use the uninstall program that you get with the drivers (if ypu already tried to load dud drivers). The uninstall program deletes extra files and takes out the dud settings in windows registry too.

The only drivers i found to work is at
http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm

After you plug the cable into the USB of the comp, go into device manager settings and make sure u change the com port to same one that vagcom is looking at.

Make sure the car ignition is on or even better still, switch the engine on before you connect the 16 pin connector side to the car. My cable only talk to the car if the engine is on, just the ignition on was no good.

To summarise, the only way i get the cable to talk is
1) plug in usb to comp
2) switch on car engine
3) then plug cable into car diagnostic port.

My cable quite happily uses 409.1 software (free version)

Cheers dude, after a lot of messing around i also worked out that the above drivers are the only ones that work. I emailed the seller and told him he might want to think about including those drivers on the CD's he supplys.

Also, happily using 409.1 (now with licence), on Vista too :)
