Auto wipers not working

Hi everyone, I have a problem with my auto wipers on my leon, they don't seem to sense the rain at all, they just seem to turn on randomly, ive been driving on the motorway when its raining in full spray, and they might wipe once every few seconds, then maybe not at all, and thats on the highest sensitivity, are auto wipers just generally bad, or is something else, any ideas?
Thanks.

Check the sensors are clear and clean, but be aware they are not the best in the world and both the Leon and Passat ( same system) are very erratic.

All the auto wipers on every car I've ever driven have their moments, but that's what the constant setting is for. I've had mine set on the lowest sensitivity in very slight rain on 30mph roads and they will constantly wipe, conversely I've had them on the highest sensitivity on a motorway in torrential rain only for them to wipe intermittently.

I also hate the way that, if it's left on automatic wipe overnight and it's rained, it won't wipe the windscreen when you start the car. Other cars with this feature do this.

I think the cleanliness of the windscreen plays a big part: the windscreen gets greasy in winter weather and I think this affects the sensor's efficacy.

Hi Guys, thanks for your replys, I'd just cleaned my car recently, so the sensor was about as clean as it can get, and as far as I can tell, it seems the problem isn't just auto wipers in general not being very good, I've never had the auto wipers go constant on any sensitivity, in any kind of rain, but I tried spraying the windscreen with a hosepipe, and the wipers worked fine, it seems that the sensor just can't pick up the rain/spray when I'm driving for whatever reason.

Might be a dumb question but is the sensor on the passenger side top of windscreen, also it that the same sensor for auto lights as I have found my lights come on even if it's still quite light out :/

Both our Leon and Passat are the same, I end up turning the lights off.
