im in the process of rebuilding a mk3 cupra back axle and putting it on my mk2. the front brakes are refurbed and ready to be put on the car but will wait until its all ready then do it all in 1 hit. my question is, ive stripped the axle down, cleaned everything up and am putting the stubb axle back on, can i get away without putting the back plates on that sit behind the discs??

Im guessing you are going from drums to discs?? Is it an easy job and are you running it without abs?

Ive been thinking of doing this as the next thing to my 1.4 so trying to gather information regarding it.

yes im changing to discs and yes im running without abs. its easy enough, just got to get the right brake pipes to go on to the new calipers. got all the bits to change the fronts aswell, new hubs, calipers drilled discs, lower springs and shocks etc, etc. will take some pics and do a build thread soon.

you could but as they are there to save all the crap and much getting in and to be honest VAG rear calipers are a little fragile at the best of times

are you changing from a drum model ? the standard drum brake bias setup and master cyl bore size will also have a considerable effect mind

Alright thanks mate. That could be a job for me for next year.

Im guessing it will be a bigger master cylinder. Wont the drum brake bias help? I.e keep the balance better, more to the front than rear.

mk3 axle WONT fit on a mk2!! the mounts & bushes on a mk3 are to big/wide to go into the mounts for the mk2. i will just have to get a 8/16v axle and put the bits onto that one!

mk3 axle has different stub axles and discs/hubs seperate etc also mind

if you have em both there can you meaure and see if a thinner mk2 bush will fit inside a mk3 beam ?

flapper, the metal that surrounds the bush on the mk3 wont physically fit into the gap of the mounts of the mk2! its too wide!

i know most of the bush itself on a mk3 is flared outside see so i just wondered if the beam itself could have been same width as a mk2 bush that was all as they are thinner by a lot

no worries though

I changed the MS to a golf mk2 gti one which was a 22mm jobie, had 300mm discs on the front Nd the said the said rear discs, one of those I wanted to do it becuase I can mods but in all honest to no gain and you'll end up with a nervous tailhappy car under brakes which took no prisoners.

In essense don't bother, the abs controls the rear brake bias to prevent them locking, on cars without abs they are prevented with a load dependant valve which moderates the amount of pressure that goes to the back depending on how much weight is on the rear axle. To make it work properly you need one of those but you got to start splicing brake lines etc
