Wouldnt mind knowing this too. Id say that any will be fine, bosch ones will do the job, so long as they get up to temp quick. ANyone know where they are?! i had the cover off my engine the other day and nothing stood out, they just under the injectors? under the little metal bracket thing?

ok

spoke to bosch today and it seems they dont do a duraterm chromium for the TDI engines. so i guess its back to standard duraterm's.

Editing your spelling
do they heat up quick then , as mine , as soon as u turn the ignition on the coil light goes out straight away , quicker than the other lights , and starts 1st time every time ??

because at the temps you have at the moment they wont be working, you can start direct injection diesels with out glowplugs, they re only really used by he engine under 5 degrees from memory, where you will see the light stay on longer when its under freezing.

hmm

thats interesting i was going to replace my glow plugs soon, as the car ive just bought with 67k on it takes a couple of turns of the key to start, especially on the recent cold mornings weve had. should i be looking elsewhere for a fault?

TBH glowplugs dont sound like your problem unless your not holding the key long enough? I know mine when the temp is low, you can hear the engine spinning, then it'll catch one one or 2 which will bring the others in. Tried putting a little throttle on when starting? Could just be a sensor telling the ECU the engine is warm when its not and not sending in enough fuel? just stabbing in the dark. Does it sound like the engine is spinning slow?

hmm

well mine does have a slightly coughy/wheezy startrer motor, which supprises me as my 850 T5R has covered 116k and touch wood sounds great when turning over.

have you had your timing belt done recently?

I had mine done on my old leon a few years back. the engine seemed fine until a few months down the line and the engine was harder and harder to start. I put VAG-COM on the leon and traced the TDI Timing. the report said the TDI Timing was too retarded to plot a graph.

http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-scope/TDIGraph.html

I took it back to the Stealer who had the car for a week. the only issue was it took ages to start when the car was cold.

They could not figure out how the timing was out since it started fine in warm weather and the glowplugs were working, however when they changed the belt again the car worked fine are that. it would appear they had either stretched the belt when fitting it or it was not the correct one. Without VAG-COM though at had they would most like still have the car.

oh bugger

yes the chap i bought it from had had the timming belt replaced at about 60k, buy a non-SEAT garage!!! i think ill run up the TDI test tomorrow. whats the procedure? ive got 409.1 vagcom.

http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-scope/TDIGraph.html

Step by step:

* Make sure you are using VAG-COM Release 303.1 or newer.
* Start your engine
* Start VAG-COM
* Click [Select]
* Click [01-Engine]
* Click [Meas. Blocks - 08]
* Go to group 000
* Click [Switch to Basic Settings]
* Click [TDI Timing]
* Select your engine code from the drop-down menu

It is normal for the glowplug light to flash and for the engine sound to change slightly while using this function. This thread may be helpful as well: http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=163435

The TDI Timing checker does not work in Shareware Mode since Basic Settings is not available.

Note to 1.9 PD (pumpe duese aka unit injectors) and CR (common rail) owners: The timing in PD and CR engines is determined electronically by the ECU. There is neither a need nor an ability to check timing on the PD or CR engines using VAG-COM.. There are no graphs published for the simple reason that the timing is set using a dedicated VAG locking tool when changing the timing belt :)

cheers

fingers crossed for me, as the garage that did the belt is over in Birmingham i think. so not exactly local to go and hassle. the reason i thought it was the glow plugs was the milage/age and the fact it strikes up ok on the second turn of the key.

i thought my glow plugs had gone also but they were fine. the other thing you may want to check is the Glow plug relay. but if the tdi timing can be plotted then at least you can eliminate that out of the equation.

ok

does the glow plug relay arc or pack up altogether? presumabably i can check the voltage on the glow plug rail.

yep

it starts first time when its hot. here's the timing chart i did today:

i wasnt sure which engine to choose from the drop down list, as they didnt seem to have any SEAT's listed so i chose the ASV one as i think thats the engine thats fitted.

think the 110bhp is the AHF or AFN. ALH is the 90bhp. tbh I dont know much about tdi pump timing so I cannot comment, those since the timing reports

"Timing within spec: slightly advanced"

my guess the timing should be ok. I would go with the glow plugs first of all. you can at least remove them and inspect them. Also check the glowplug connection and the rail.

if you need any then cheapest place would be Eurocarparts, check them online.
