Bio diesel

Just been doing a little research and fell upon this site.

It seems that the fuel is covered by SEAT for warranty purposes, after cars built in 96 onwards. They even advertise Biodiesel forcourts - so how much is this compared to the norm? Theres a guy at work currently running a Ford TDCI 1.4 on cooking oil - he has an old motrobike tank in the passenger footwell and all the gubbins is linked to the engine - car is running no problems.

Could be an option with fuel reaching the £1 mark.

I thought it was cheap fuel, a bit like LPG in the way of price.

It says in the manual of mine that you can use 5% biodiesel. But to be honest I can't get excited about such a tiny percentage - it hardly seems worth it, both from a price point of view and environmentally.

Before using 100% biodiesel in my car, I'd want more evidence than just this website - I've seen equally compelling evidence that VAG do not warrant the use of 100% biodiesel.

I personally, with experience of Landrovers and Rover 2.0 SDI Turbos running on straight Supermarket cooking oil, would say, save 25ltrs of good diesel and cut the cooking oil with this, But only as an emergency measure. Say next fuel strike. Or if stranded in the middle of no where, with no diesel, but an ample supplyof cooking oil, it is good to know that you could use any kind of cooking oil, or paraffin (Kerosene) as a "get you home" measure. But not in PDs (unless its life or death) I would like to know how Merc do it, they say all their diesel engines will run on straight Biofuel. (historical note Germany were making fuel for diesel engines from coal during WWII so their biofuel experience goes way back, wish my old brain could remember the name of the process? anybody?

Just another note on the biofuel (cooking oil) thing, I remember reading once that VW said their only prob with bio (made from rapeseed oil) was that it eats rubber type components in pumps ie seals and therefore pumps wear out quicker. (this was in the pre-PD days) hope it helps.

I asked SEAT UK this question back in January and they rang me back the next day (after speaking to the krauts) to tell me only 5% biodiesel is permitted in their PD engines - most forecourt diesel in the UK already contains 5% biodiesel.

Knocks that one on the head then!
