Guys I've posted on here a few times about this but its really doing my head in now. Originally thought the turbo was gone as blue smoke burning oil smell is sign of turbo.

My confusion is that it only smokes when warm and sat still. When driving even when hot and even under hard driving ;) there is no smoke and no smell soon as I pull up leave the car running get out and after about 10-15 secs it starts to smoke and smell. But soon as you start driving again it clears. Pain in the ass if you stuck in traffic!

Anyone got any ideas, I thought if it was turbo it would smoke all the time and would smoke worse under boost. The car drives fine no loss of power or boost. Only mod is forge DV and n249 bypass.

Please help!!:(

Are they a big job to replace?

Ive not long bought the car and Ive got receipts for oil pipes cleaned and valve replaced. I think this is the valve on the air intake pipe?

I would say it is the turbo seals that have gone. You will most likely the see the smoke when your idling as the oil leaking will build up in the exhaust. When moving you will be clearing it quicker, hence no visible smoke.

Is there any way to check the valve seals or turbo oil seals without changing them? Ive been looking up on changing valve seals and looks a big job.

Would the turbo have to come off to change the seals and is it a big job to change the seals? Is it a diy job or a specialist?

you would want a rebuild kit, there are different seals and wear points in the turbo so no point trying to change just 1. you could try taking the intake off the turbo and feel for shaft play, this is usually a good indication of how bad a turbo is, there shouldnt be any in and out play with only minimal side to side play.

its possible to rebuild the turbo yourself but i wouldnt recommend it unless you have a pretty good understanding of how turbo's work, downside of this is that you wont be balancing the core again. in real world i have seen rebuilt turbo's last 60k miles but others only do a few thousand. rebuild kit will cost around £50.

professional rebuild will cost in the region of 250-300 upwards depending on where you go ect, good thing about this is you will get some sort of guarantee with it so if it stops working in 3000 miles you send it back and they will have to try it again (which i have also seen happen)

if your wheel has started hitting the housing then worst case is the wheel and housing also need replaced which will be quite a bit more.

Ok looks like gona take intake pipe off an have look for play later on today and will post back. If there is only minimal play side to side and no up and down would say its valve stem seals? If play in turbo then its a turbo rebuild?

if you dont know what your feeling for you will probably have more questions than answers, would be better if you could get someone you know to have a look for you. how many miles is the turbo on? and is it the original? a k03 probably wont make it past about 80-100k miles

The car has done 119k and I think its original turbo. I have a fair mechanical knowledge and have changed a few turbos in my time but never rebuilt one! Also never come across this sort of issue before. I'm going to my mates in an bit to do a compression test just to make sure that's ok

i doubt compression test will show much, only places smoke in the exhaust can come from is turbo seals, valve stem seals or piston rings. most likely place for it to come from is turbo. if your mate knows cars get him to have a look and give opinion, as i said if you can reach into the cold side with the intake off then give it a good feel, wiggle and pull.

the turbo is fairly common as it was on alot of models so if i were you and your confident trying a rebuild then go for it, you can pick up another used one for £100-£200 if its all goes wrong. theres plenty of youtube vids of how to rebuild turbos and guides on internet. make sure you have the tools you need before starting - the one you might not have is circlip pliars

Done compression 175psi on all 4 on dry test and 225 on wet test. Spark plugs are dry and normal colour not black, but when spark plug was removed from cylinder 3 ( going from belt side) smoke was coming out???? What could this be????? Also on wet test it was like the car was trying to fire up even when all plugs removed and only tester in 1 cylinder?????
