Bored at stoplights

Hi,

I have a Leon Mk II, 1.4 TFSi and sometimes when i wait for a traffic light to become green I play with the shift stick and i push it up into 3rd gear and pull it down into 4th gear without pressing the clutch ... i don't push the stick all the way, i just move it back and forth, as much as it allows with a gentle push. I was wondering if that could cause any problems to the gear box or maybe something else ?

Also, then i play with it and try to push the stick and move it to the left (like putting it in reverse) the stick begins to vibrate and i hear a faint grinding noise as soon as i move the stick to the left a bit (this is also without pressing the clutch). Should it be normally doing this or is my gearbox misaligned or something ?

Thanks.

I wouldn't do that if I where you...I think the synchromesh doesn't like that if you push it so far that the grinding becomes apparent to you

"The synchronizer[2] has to change the momentum of the entire input shaft and clutch disk. Additionally, it can be abused by exposure to the momentum and power of the engine itself, which is what happens when attempts are made to select a gear without fully disengaging the clutch. This causes extra wear on the rings and sleeves, reducing their service life."

If you *think* it might be doing harm, then don't do it, lol!

Get yourself a crossword book! :)

If a clutch wasn't necessary you wouldn't have one. :headhurt:

Maybe find something else to play with?

I've been filling my engine up with sand recently instead of oil, do you think this might cause any harm?? All I've heard is a really loud banging noise and purple smoke pouring from the exhaust..
Any thoughts?

:p

Heh, it's not like i'm pushing/forcing it into the gear, i'm moving it just a little, about the same amount as you move it left from center point to 1st/2nd gear, or right to 5th/6th gear.

But i'll try stop :D

keep going, eventually it will slip into any gear from neutral without so much as a murmur or a groan

you can sit there all day playing with it then as you probably won't have any forward motion left out the gear box as it will have all worn away
