brake caliper bolts

what type of head is on these,thought it was 13-14mm bolts,then allen key,so is it torx as i cant see right because of the rubber boot covering it.need to change the pads as i braked at the weekend and the pad came off the metal plate .

7mm Allen key aka hex socket, on the front brakes only. Halfords do a brake key for a suitably outrageous price. The rear calipers are hex-head bolts, and you need a spanner to hold the guide pin while you undo the bolt.

Definitely 7mm hex on the front, had to buy a whole set of allen keys from tool station just for that one. Was only a tenner so cant complain and they'll come in handy in the future.

thanks guys,read a right upon them but discovered it was for the back,so went equipped with spanners for the front as i thought they would be the same,after all the allen keys i tried i guess i dont have a 7mm...lol will get one tomorrow then

7mm is an odd size, not found in many sets (which tend to go 6, 8, 10mm).

Halfords do this, which is a horrible price but does do what's needed.

A google search for 7mm allen key comes up with this one from Sealey for a much better price. However postage boosts the price back up to the Halfords level, unless there's more stuff you want.

got one from my workmate today,allen key in the socket type,he uses for working on his bike,so hopfully tonight i will get a chance to do it

job done,no probs that i no off,took it a run pressed the brakes and they work,however only done one side will do the other tomorrow.these bolts were too easy to come off,i would say the bottom one was loose even and the top required no effort,the second pad has started to come away from the metal,these pads were fitted just over a year ago and still look new as i have only done about 6000mls since then,so am asumming they where cheap although the bill wasent.

Guide pin torque setting is 28Nm.

Clean any grease from the mating faces otherwise it will upset the torque setting. Grease on the threads is not a problem as long as it doesn't get on the mating faces.

This is valid for any nut/bolt torque setting e.g. wheel bolts. A bit of grease on the thread is OK, but keep it well clear of the back face of the bolt head and the shoulder on the mating face of the wheel.

Those pads sound like a bad deal. The friction material should never come away from the pad backing.

i blame me for not using the car enough,never used during the day as i have works van,usually use it over the weeken for short journeys,shops etc,thats why i have brakes failing for mot,s almost each year due to rust build up on disc ends up scoring pads and discs,this year it only failed for back pads and discs,in six years i,ve had it its failed on brakes at 3 times(pads and discs all round)this year only the back as i average 5-6000mls a year,the joy of motoring eh,having said that i,ve had a belmont,fiesta,rover,cavalier and a few others in my time and the leon,s been the worst for brakes by a mile,some other failed on pads thats all
