Brake Wear Sensor

After 5 months of having my Leon Cupra I have just got round to reading the owners guide properly. I noticed that there is a break wear warning light on the instrument panel. Does anyone know if this is just a gimmick or whether its actually useful? Also if it does work, is it accurate and how bad are the breaks when it comes on?

I can only comment on bmw's but I would imagine the systems are the same idea
Basically you have a sensor either clipped onto or integrated into one of the pads front and one rear, once it wears down to maybe 2mm of material left the sensor is worn through, causing the light to come on and you to realise that your pads are knackered before your driving round metal to metal.

A good system if the pads wear evenly. If for some reason a pad sticks and doesn't wear down as quick as the others then you wont get a warning but youll get to the metal. That said without the system fitted the same would happen anyway so you would be inthe same boat anyway.

just cut the wire off the brake and conect them together to get rid of the light as aftermarket pads wont have a sensor.
