What? That it's perfectly legal for any unqualified person to carry out work on their car or another's without any proper training or experience?

Yeah it really f*cking is!!!

I shudder when I hear people messing with their brakes and ask basic questions before they tackle the job, it's really not worth saving a few quid on something like that, it could end up with disastrous consequences.

I know. Lasses in our office where like he knows as much about me about cars and I can't change my tyre. They asked if it was illegal.

I mentioned it to the guy who sits opposite me as he was out if the office who knows about cars and couldn't believe it aswell.

Scary business.

Is it normal for brand new discs ( 1500 miles) to be covered in rust? Got new pads too. .
Car squeaks like feck when handbrake is on 3 clicks, does cable need tightened? I'm not a mechanical guy, engineering failure! Haha

The discs themselves if sat for a while or exposed to water will rust up, It's normal and only surface rust, it'll get stripped away when the brakes are applied.

Sounds like you need to bring the handbrake up another click, probably just on the point of not holding the car.

Put the car in gear if you're parking on a hill and don't trust your handbrake, obviously remember to knock it out of gear when you start the car ;)

Haha, I never leave it in gear but did the next day, couldnt figure out why it wasn't starting properly wen I finished work. Haha. Would having the handbrake on tight wear the breaks down? A lot of people say it's fine if it squeeks just leave it in gear?

Only if you drive round with the handbrake on. Clues would be a burning smell, juddering, loss of performance and possibly smoke or a small fire.

Just for the record, I'm not doing anything with the brakes myself lol, getting a pro to do it (because I haven't a clue).

Regarding the rusty brake discs, I only got mine changed a few weeks ago and they're rusty as fu*k. The actual disc rust is just surface rust so comes off when you apply the brakes, its still horrible to look at though. However, the drums have gone really rusty and I'm probably going to use the left over caliper paint I've got to paint them.

Is it a squeak or more of a groan? It is because the brake is not applied enough to hold the car. All brakes, now or old, will get rusty if not used and they get wet.

Starts off with a squeak then turns into a groan for me.. hear it more on low speeds.

I was referring to the handbrake, but if your brakes are groaning get em checked it. A sudden and loud scraping / scratching noise could be a stone stuck. Had that the other day, frightened the heebejeebes out of me! This should disappear after a few moments though.

Good idea, i'll get it checked out this weekend but it never disappears, it only happens when I'm going around 10/15mph and use the brake. When braking at high speeds, I don't hear nothing.

It's like creeking on an old floor board! Really annoying tbh but if it's normal then nothing to worry about? Getting a "Major" service next week, I'll get them to check it over.
