Hi

I am a newbie to the SEAT forum & have just obtained my first SEAT. It is a Mk2 Ibiza 1.4 SXE ('98 model year) with 63k or so on the clock.

One thing that is vexing me is a "buzzing" noise that I think I have isolated to the ventilation system. It only happens from 55 - 60mph on and does sometimes stop if I switch the fan off (but not always) and is pretty much continuous above 60 with the fan on or off. It seemed to help when I took the pollen filter out but it is still there.

By way of description the noise sounds like a bit of tape flapping in the breeze or sort of like when the old cardboard on your bike's spokes when you were a kid (or at least when I was!).

I have had a bit of a rootle around in the dashboard & sealed up some ducts that looked like they needed it. The fan seems clear (no leaves! - filter works!) and anyway the noise doesn't change when I change the fan speed.

I would be most grateful if anyone out there has an idea of where I should be looking for this sort of noise.

Also had one other query, someone mentioned to me that it is very pricey to get the exhaust replaced on the 1.4 engines (subframe has to be dropped or something), is this really so and if so what sort of damage is one looking at cashwise? Are there any options?

Thanks

Right the air duct thing, had loads of MK2's now and everyone i've had has lost a couple of spines off the back of the vents and they've gone down into the ducting and rattled. So thats a possibility.

I havent found my exhausts to be overly pricey really and i sat and waited for it to be done on my 1.4 and they didnt seem to struggle. Where did you read this about the subframe?

I've heard this myth as well. Anyone know if its actually true??

Ive heard this myth aswell. IMO I cant really see you having to drop the subframe out. Maybe someone who has worked on one of these cars could verify/enlighten us.

Craig.

I saw the exhaust story on the Telegraph's Honest John web page, he doesn't appear to be very complimentary about the Ibiza! He did specifically mention the 1.4 engine models.

hangten, did you get any service history with the car? if so, check if it's had a new coil pack fitted. Does the buzzing seem to get 'quicker' when you go a bit faster? I fitted a new one a while back & since then, noticed a buzzing coming from (where I thought anyway) behind/inside the dashboard - drove me potty until I noticed it was the coil pack. Cost me £90 so didn't want to splash out for another so I just turn my radio up a bit! Mine's a 2l Cupra, so not sure if your's will have one, but it's a little black box about 2 inches square, bolted on the bulkhead right at the top/under the windcreen cowling.

stinkypete thanks for your info. I did get a reasonable amount of service history with the car & I will check this. The only thing is that the noise does seem to speed up at all. I will have a look at your suggestion this weekend & will post if it cures things. Thanks again

Just been on a long trip in the car and had ample opportunity to listen to the noise !! - I am 99.9% sure that it is the trim between the windscreen & the scuttle. Looking at it closely it doesn't stay flat on the windscreen even with the plastic screw thingies tightened right up.

I will have a go at it next weekend & see if I can do something more permanent about stopping it.

Thanks for the responses.

BTW still haven't heard how much an exhaust should cost on the 1.4.

Rich

i had that buzzing noise at high speed and found it was the plastic panel coming off the windscreen, i took it off, put a bead of silicone underneath it and screwed it back on. havent had the noise since!

hey had my ibiza 2l 8v cupra mk2 for about 8 months and only just found this web site well gutted. but anyway i also have this like blowing noise when i put my foot down its a bit annoying so i just turn the stereo up. does anyone have any ideas what this could be and if they can help me out. appreciate it. cheers

the exhaust problem suggested is mainly becuase original exhausts are made in one piece - even the 16v and thats a twin downpipe

you do have to drop it a bit to get it out in one piece but it's not that hard

replacements (cat / downpipe) usually entail a replacement pipe in 2 pieces so just cut the old one off and bolt in the easy 2 piece

heres a few examples of aftermarket solutions
