Calibrate front wiper motor

Good Afternoon,

I have a Seat Leon 1P 56 plate which had no wiper arms when purchased. The nearside motor had broke so I've replaced with the correct part. When installing wipers the new motor doesn't move correctly and makes a knocking noise. Can someone help me to set them up as it's needed for work next week.

Any help appreciated

Thanks in advance

Hello there,

on some of the newer VAG car's I think the new wiper motor may need to be recalibrated to the convenience control module, basically the car body equipment ECU. Or the wiper motor might just need to be aligned with the other separate wiper motor on the drivers side, otherwise they may be out of sequence, i.e risk of catching one another.

Ideally I think you're going to need the wipers in the rest park position, this is when the wiper arms are at their lowest position level parallel with the base of windscreen. Sometimes I think when a new wiper motor is fitted, the car body ECU can temporarily kick in the APP = (Alternating Park Position) which can possibly cause misalignment issues of wiper motors/arms. Due to the fact that the slight kick up off rest position can vary, depending whether the ignition has been switched on & off more then twice in a row, or how many full wipe cycles have been completed.

Basically the Alternating Park Position means once the wiper arms have completed one full wipe cycle, and return back down to their lowest rest position, they will move up slightly just off there lowest rest position, this is called I think, APP = (Alternating Park Position)

It's something like every 80 to 100 wipe cycles that the APP can possibly kick in, but only happens that once until another 80 or 100 wipe cycles are completed. Or like I say it can kick in when a new or replacement wiper motor is fitted, plus is or can be affected by how often the ignition is operated in.

1a) make sure bonnet & boot are closed

1b) switch ignition on

2) push down wiper stork to operate manual one full wipe, not slow or fast speed just the manual function option only.

3) once one full wipe is completed switch off ignition and remove key.

3a) check to make sure the wipers don't kick up slightly once they've done the above one full wipe, if they do then this means they're not in the full rest position, but are in the Alternating Park Position. REPEAT function until the full rest park position is obtained.

4) once in full rest park position you'll be able to align/adjust the wiper arm/s.

On some VAG vehicles you'll need a diagnostic scanner to communicate with the convenience control module (car body equipment ECU) but not always.

Hope this helps

Thank you for that very informative piece of information it's much appreciated.

Firstly the new charger for my diagnostics came today so after work I charged it and was able to do a full scan. The codes that came up are as follows.

Seat Leon 1P
Sedan
BSE 1.6L 75kw

09 - Central Electrics (01496) - Left fog light bulb - Open circuit/ short circuit to B+ Active/ Static

09 - Central Electrics (02071) - Local data bus - No signal/ Communication - Passive/ Sporadic

09 - Central Electrics (00153) - Driver windshield wiper motor - No signal/ Communication- Passive Sporadic

42 - Door Electronics Driver Side (00914) - Rear Left window lift switch, driver side - Implausible signal - Active/ Static

01496 - So I've inspected the left fog light and noticed wiring damage to the connector which I have now replaced and wired and all is well.

02071 - This I'm currently stuck on and where the fault is or what steps to take first.

00153 - As mentioned this was purchased without wiper arms which I now have. The passenger motor did not work but the drivers side did. I've removed the passenger motor and replaced but seems to make a knocking noise. The driver side doesn't seem to do a full rotation now either and are both out of sync. This has been tricky as I didn't know how they were set. I've took both motor out after work today and manually set them the same before reiinstalling hoping that would work but no joy. Any ideas where to go from here and is it worth purchasing a driver side motor now as it's also flagging up faults.

00914 - The window switch on each door used for its own individual window works fine (UP/ DOWN/ AUTO). On the Driver side switches it works for the driver window, the passenger window and the rear right but unfortunately no rear left. I've checked the connector to switch at rear left and driver door and both seem fine and intact is it possible the fault is further down near the module on driver or rear left door ?

Thanks in advance for any help it's really appreciated!

Ok so fault code 01496 regarding fog light issue you've sorted it from what you've mentioned.

Fault code 02071 is possibly a bad connection somewhere, and I think as you've also got fault code 00153 this could well be a dodgy connection with a different control module that shares the same wire. Car body ECU is stating it's lost signal reference with certain car body equipment devices. Sometimes if you get code 02071 and it's logged alongside code 00153 this can also be related to water ingress, either in a connection plug or control module, which ever it is it's a connection signal loss.

I think fault code 00914 again this is a connection fault somewhere, the car body equipment ECU is saying it's lost signal reference with the N/S/R window.
This communication loss is either with window regulator motor, or the window switch, or the wiring loom. This might be a warn window regulator, but it also could be related to the other connection fault codes you've listed ??

You'll need a test light or multimeter to test for earth, power and resistance signal, to help pin point the possible wiring fault connection issue, like I say could be a bad connection or wirring fault, including water ingress that can affect wiring signals in loads of weird ways.

I think on some twin individual front wiper motors they can sometimes have a marker alignment line or notch, that you have to align the wiper crank arm or spindle up with, either with motor bolted up or unbolted before fitment, but with the wire connector plugged in, but like I say this varies from make and model of car. But I think on your MK2 Leon you possibly have to align the motor's first before you attach the wiper arms, as one motor is the master one and the other is the slave which must receive the correct signal/s from the master motor, there's a possibility you might need a comprehensive scan tool to aid the synchronization of the two motors. The convenience control module I think has to be able to communicate with the master motor, that I think might have a module receiver that'll need encoding to the ECU, which then possibly like I say enables the correct alignment signals between the two wiper motors ??

It's either an electrical wiring connection issue fault or the master wiper motor needs encoding correctly to ECU.

Have you got a workshop manual like the Haynes manual for your MK2, as it could have the procedure regarding each individual wiper motor alignment, I don't have a manual for the MK2 Leon unfortunately.

Hope this helps

Good afternoon Si,

Thank once again for the detailed explanation!

This morning I had a good read of what you have wrote and followed a few points to narrow down the faults.

I have to say that a that a few earth points on the car and other connections do seem to have slight corrosion which seems to be an issue with the VW Group. I've used contact cleaner and manually cleaned as many contacts linked to the faults as possible. The fault does seem to be on the window regulator as for a start it's part number is slightly different than what is specced for this car so I've got a new one coming which should solve that.

After cleaning contacts the driver side wiper motor is now working fine so I'm quite happy about that. The issue I think is coding for the passengers wiper motor to work in conjunction with the drivers side. Fortunately I have found someone able to do this early tomorrow morning before work and if not resolved I'm sure I will have a more detailed description to what the actual fault is.

I've now purchased the Haynes Manual from eBay so will have a good read when it arrives in the week.

Thank you for your time and information it's much appreciated.

Take care
