you should be fine untill 100k but many car's don't make it that far, it a bit random really. just dont put it off for to long, it should be done every five year regardless of mileage.

no its definatly not gone yet. I was hoping to hold out until i get some cash together thats why i was asking where the cover was. Does the water pump also need changin on these engines at the same time?

My old Polo had 65K on the clock when the water pump went. Might be worth doing it now.

Ive been told my cam belt needs replacing does anyone have any idea of the cost and ive also been told that its a specialist job only to done by Seat ( is that bobbins or what ), based in Stockport if anyone can recommend where to have the work done.
I know im gonna have to have a diagnostic as my Cupra R is still juddering.

Any advice guys.

I read this thread last night and it set alarm bells ringing!!

My Cupra is 6.5 years old and has done 39k miles (6k/year), but has not had the belt changed yet. I've never been told at the services it needed doing and after looking in the service manual, it recommends doing it at 120k miles!!!

I just phoned the local Seat dealer up and was told that Seat have now changed their service schedule to do a replacement every 4 years, because some people were like me and only doing a token number of miles and never reaching the 120k. Then, when the belt went bang, they were surprised!

Waiting for them to call back now and tell me how much and how quickly I can get it booked in.... :-(

And read above for approx costs! ;)

I can recommend AJ Auto's also (not for Stockport of course!), used them recently and I work just up the road from them, very convenient! :)

I've had a quote for circa £150 for the cambelt and water pump. :D

Thats a VAG specialist.

that really doesnt sound right. All quotes Iv had have been around 270- 450. 150 sounds very low or is a friend who is a specialist doing it after hours.

Rhumber: I took your advice and I am im booked in tommoro morning. Don't suppose you know which water pump they use do you, i never asked? The metal ones are better arn't they?

I would have thought it would be the std water pump with plastic impellor, unless you ask for the metal more reliable version?

If you want the metal version I would give them a ring so they can have it delivered it time.

From what I was told at SEAT, they used to use platic ones until these failures came to light from which point they used metal ones instead.

The only reason it's recommended to change the water pump is because there's no way of knowing which one you've got (later ones likely to be metal ones, but can you be sure?)

The original plastic impellor ones have been upgraded to a stiffer more resilient plastic that is said to be as good as the metal impellor one. There is no price difference between the two but you do need to specify that you want the metal one if you want it fitted. If you haven't I wouldn't worry about it as its has been upgraded. If you don't have it fitted yet, I got the metal one fitted;)

I've no idea when my cam belt was last changed.

Can I tell if it needs changing just by looking at it?

I'm guessing its the black 'rubber' belts on the left hand side of the block.

I think it has tiny cracks in - like wear and tear.

What would you recommend?

If your belt has any cracks in it, no matter how big or small, get it changed ASAP.

Personally, if my cambelt had cracks in it, I'd have it towed to the dealers.

had it done at AJ autos yesterday and i must say they are very highly reccomended by me. very professional, even got called sir, which you could expect from a decent dealer but not a garage (normally) they worked well to time and even got it done before. They knew what they were doing and explained to me everything what they did. I asked the guy if the old belt looked bad as i was still unsure whether it had or hadnt been done because of no history and he went to show it me all the old bits what they took off an it did need doing. Cost £315 all together as i got some new front aero retro wipers and got a new drive belt (fan belt) too which they did not charge me extra for installation as they would be removing it while they did the cam belt (this was charged extra at another garage i went to before)
