Evening,

i have a 2011 leon 1.2 tsi, the garage says that the cam chain is noisy. it makes the usual tappet noise, but now is a lot noisier.

how much am i looking at for it to be changed?
is there anything else that shold be changed aswell as the chain and tensioner?
can it be done under warrenty or something similar, due to it needing replacing..and it shouldnt do.

thanks

wolfy

Never heard it called a chain before! Called a belt around here. Just had mine done with the tensioner and water pump... Cost me 380 which seemed expensive...

The belts/chains should be done once every 60k miles or 5 years, so you're coming up on it...

The tensioner and water pump should be done, only costs slightly more and it saves on labour in the long run

Some of the petrol engines use a chain to drive the cam (like on a bike) and not a flexible belt. I believe the 1.2 TSI is one that uses a chain.

I have no idea on cost for a replacement, sorry.

Being an 2011 car, the original 3-year SEAT warranty will have run out but if you extended it (or took out an aftermarket warranty) then check your documentation to see what is covered.

Its more likely the tensioner that's at fault but regardless don't hang about getting it changed, you don't want to become another tensioner failure victim.

Some engines run on a cambelt & some run on a camchain.

Cambelts are changed. Camchains are not.

Cam chains are supposed to be a non service item & are supposed to last the life of the engine.

The 1.4Tsi is a chain driven engine & I've been told mine doesn't need changing ever.

I don´t understand how you guys have not heard of this before, but VAG denmark has just had a massive lawsuit (other countries the same) with the 1.2 and 1.4 tsi. Its the chain that stretch, combined with soft/brittle chain guides and a bad tensioner design. On the bigger models with variable valve timing the VVT unit is also made out of reused **** or something.

Danish news TV had a big episode about it, and just the people they found with dead 1.2/1.4 TSI cause of this issue with 3.000£+ bills where in the hundreds or more.

Those engines are just using a rubbish chain system and as such, major repair should expected if you ask me :/

VAG denmark has stated that people (with or without warrenty) should contact their local dealers and get the car looked at and then they would make a reasonable offer (most of them is free, some with high milage and such has to pay a percentage and so on)
I have a coworker that used to work at VW and he also mentioned that they pretty much had 2 out of 15 mechanics going, just doing chain works on these smaller engines.

1.4Tsi timing chain tensioner known to fail starts of as a rattle and gets worse, cost to replace on 1.4 around £1200 at dealer incl replacement chain and tensioner a labour intensive job. If you are first owner have a full service history and a bit of SEAT loyalty try SEAT Customer Services they may help out.
