Hi guys.
My car had been running badly for a while, with all the symptoms of the timing being out. I purchased a VCDS and every time I plugged it in the timing block was reading 0.0 every time which I thought was very strange. One time it changed to +4 and straight away we were able to get it back to 0.0. It had an intermittent camshaft position sensor fault keep popping up but at the time I didn't think anything of this really (not really knowing much about it). Anyway, I was still driving it about at this stage and then the glow plug lights came on, next day they were off again. When hitting boost my car was kangarooing, like it was hitting boost and then immediately not letting me go any further into boost and it was horrible. My glow plug light came on again and I still had all the symptoms of timing being out; white smoke, very lumpy idle, stinking of unburnt fuel, sometimes struggling to start, feeling like it was going to cut out when stuck in traffic and very low MPG.
After doing some reading on the old FB I saw somebody else who had issues with their camshaft position sensor, got it changed and their timing was in fact well put.
My question is, could my boost issue be linked to the timing being out? Has anyone else had a camshaft position sensor fail before and how easy is it to do yourself? If there is anybody kind enough to write a guide on it I would be so happy- my boyfriend should be able to do it with a guide.
Thanks in advance, I drive a PD170 Leon, engine code bmn.
Edit: I stopped driving it after the glow plug light came on for the 2nd time as didn't want to cause the car any damage by continuing to drive it about.
