Camshaft pulley failure

H All,
New to the site as recently purchased '14 plate Leon 1.2 ST,DSG. Engine lost power and cut out. It was recovered to the local dealership who informed me the variable adjusting camshaft pulley has broken up and pistons have hit valves. It has a warranty and they just want to replace the head. Anybody know if piston or bottom end damage is caused when this happens or are these engines pretty robust?
Would like to know as I am looking to argue this with the warranty company to put a new engine in.

If I remember correctly this was a fairly common problem on this engine and I think Seat/VW were repairing when out of warranty, think there is a post about it on this site.

Thanks Walone,
I had already seen the Guardian report but not the others.
I have the car back and it is now repaired, I will be monitoring this closely over the next few weeks.
The concerning thing is that I have learnt that the recall to change the pulley was completed on my car in 2016 at 13k miles, it is 2 1/2 years later and now at 32k on the clock and the so called modified pulley has failed. Seat customer services appear to be ducking out of the way and not addressing the potential that the modified pulleys could not be up to the job.

I'm wondering if the pulley that was fitted in 2016 was a faulty one.
