Just looking for a bit of help on a strange shake i have in the car. It starts at 80mph and stays in it until over 100mph (dont worry i know the speed limit) i found it out while overtaking. It feels possibly from the front end of the car. Ive had all wheels balanced several times and also car has been aligned 2 or 3 times but no change.....so basically any ideas? Ive jacked it up and checked all bushes and ball joint and all feels ok. Its very annoying so all help appreciated, cheers.
 
The wheel balancing is only guaranteed up to 70mph, they won't do it to 80, 90 etc because those aren't the speed limits. It happens in my car - and more than likely a majority of other people's cars too :)

Buckled wheel on pothole?
 
I had this between 60 and 70mph which was massively annoying, I had the wheels balanced twice with no success, but it went away once I changed tyres.
 
Yes, look into the tyres being oval but also check that the wheels are tound too. Very easy to get an oval wheel these days as they make them thin and light.

If a wheel is oval it will be more likely on the inside. the spoke side is stronger so doesn't buckle as easy.

yeah if you hit a pothole is can be easy to damage the tyre itself rather than the wheel, so your tires are 'oval' as Nath mentioned above :)
 
Well before I bought my Leon FR the steering shook at 80 on test drive. I highlighted it and when I picked the car up it had been resolved. Now the thing is when I test drove the car they had different wheels on and I had the garage change them for a different set I seen on another FR. Now the problem is back and even after getting new tyres ( Continentals), balance and alignment the shake is worse than before! Doing my head in. I am going to get white finger before this is sorted-its doing my head in!
 
It could be the drive shafts, in which case there is little you can do. Also being a diesel with a lot of torque, its going to have bigger drive shafts - more rotational mass, more potential for vibration.

That said my Golf 150 tdi was 'ok'
 
Check shock absorbers, had this with a celica few year ago , check theres no leaks at the front. Also crap tyres go outa shape very easily

A friend of mine had this on his BMW. It was a siezed brake caliper (as he found after changing all manner of other things). It started as an annoying high-speed shake, which got worse slowly initially and then as time went by it got worse faster and faster.
 
Yeah i still havent got to the bottom of it after putting a different set of wheels & tyres on the car its still the same...time to dig deeper!!
