CD changers - specific units or will a Sony fit?

We're about to buy a 2.0 TDi Stylance Sport. Reading the various threads on here we don't want to go down the ipod route as it looks like a bit of an afterthought. Instead I plan to fit a CD changer.

In our old Saab we've got a Sony changer unit. Is this likely to work with the Leon's head unit or does it need a specific Seat changer (if so, how much is this?)

Thanks for any help

Its prolly an idea to get one with either USB or Ipod fitted as all the wiring to the drivers seat will be done... Then its a case of swapping either the USB or Ipod unit for the CD Changer. Whilst other manufacturers may make one that interfaces correctly, you can buy 2nd hand VW cd changers for around £80... On Fleabay... And it will be a straight swap...

If you get one with an Ipod adapater and don't want it, I'll buy it!

we're going 2nd hand - the car we're looking at has nothing but a radio so anything we get will be aftermarket.

USB interface with flash card could be a good option

I've had a Sony cd changer fitted to my other cars standard head units before using a connects2 adaptor or similar, but have not been able to find one for the Mk2 Leon.
Does anyone have info please?

Hi lard-ajc

If you're interested in my (unsolicited) 2 pence worth I would advise you to save your money on a CD changer and opt for an MP3 enabled radio/CD player instead.

I paid £300 to the dealership to have a CD changer fitted and while I am quite happy with it it will hold a maximum of 6 discs. 6 discs is not too bad but now that I have been shown (on this very site) how to make MP3 CDs these are all that I now play.

I have managed to get 10 albums onto one common or garden CD-R, which loads straight into the head unit instead of faffing aroung under my seat. Added to that I get the album/track info scrolling across the display, which does not happen when playing from the CD changer.

All of my steering wheel-mounted functions work and I now find that the CD changer is almost redundant.

Admittedly, I can now have up to 16 of my favourite albums on tap but if I had known about the MP3 CDs sooner then 10 albums at a time would have kept me happy enough and £300 could have bought 'er indoors a new handbag.

Hope this helps.

interesting point.

We've now got the car and it's just got the normal CD player, not mp3 enabled. Currently having several burnt CDs rattling in the drives door bin.

How much is it to change to the mp3 enabled head unit (seems strange that whoever specced the car didn't pay the £25 extra)

cheers

Can you assist me in the production of the MP3 CD? I made one, it worked ok on the PC but despite the head unit recognising an MP3 Disk in the head unit, I couldnt play it. What have I done wrong as the disk still works perfectly on my Pc with 176 tracks on it
