So both are probably due.... looking at my paperwork timing belt definately. Now I know to get water pump done too etc. Clutch though sends shivers down my spine, I had a focus that was over a grand to do. Do we have any mechanics here?

Cambelt was pretty scary for me, but it was in my early days of mucking around with the car. I don't think I'd be too nervous about doing it now. It's all about taking your time - as well as making sure you've got the right parts. Clearing everything out so you have access is what takes the most time. Don't try to skirt taking all that stuff out, because it'll just make more work for you. Make sure you put it all back together properly too - I had a little clip just out of place on my pancake pipe, and the moment any pressure went into the system, it blew off and I lost all power. When I had no idea what it was, that was proper scary.

It's a bit of a pain, but the good news is that most of the jobs that involve the most work are the kind that you don't end up doing all that often. There are also some really good videos on YouTube, either on the mk4 Golf, which is more or less the same, or on the Leon itself.

Clutch is something I really should be doing, and don't really have any excuse not to do. Hopefully I'll get round to it before it gets round to failing on me.

Yeah I always follow the philosophy, I’d rather have the car off the road a week and take my time doing it than rush it **** it up and ruin it

Always better to do it that way. Nothing worse than trying to do something when it's getting dark and it's pissing down with rain, or not taking the time on bolts and ending up with stripped or snapped heads in places you haven't got any space to get them out after.

There are lots of good videos on YouTube on how to change your clutch, as long as you've got the time to do it slowly. I've probably watched all of them twice, but still no closer to changing it.

The issue for me is more the worry that when I put it all back together, it just won't work and I'll need to take everything back to pieces. I just can't face that.

That and the fact every single guide I've come across talks like you know what you're doing, when I want to get started from the point of actually buying the clutch and what you need to take into consideration when you're doing this - I look at the LUK kits on the Euros website and they seem to come in two types - for an LUK flywheel and for a Sachs flywheel. How am I supposed to know that? Do I have to take it all apart first and then order the part once it's in pieces, or is there a way of finding out before?

In the end, I've got the time and I've probably got the ability to do it, but it's these little questions that I never seem to get solid answers to that end up stopping me.

They’re the same flywheel mate just different makes. A lot of the time they use generic photos. Clutch flywheel slave cylinder seem to be the contents of most kits

To be honest that's part of the confusion - at ECP they've got an LUK clutch kit with the note "Flywheel ManufacturerLUK" and another LUK clutch kit with the note "Flywheel ManufacturerSachs". Different prices though - by about £50. Both supposedly fit my car.

Nightmare.

Also... people offer single mass flywheel conversions. I wouldn’t go there make sure you’re getting a dual mass flywheel. My dad converted my focus and it was horrible a lot more jerky and heavier. I’ve read a lot saying stick with the dual mass, just a bit more expensive

Are those prices just for the clutch kit and dmf, as last year my 2005 Ibiza 1.8t I had the dmf and clutch Luk replaced for £650 Inc at least a days garage labour and all parts.

When I tried to get a price for Luk parts alone, on ecp or gsf it came to more than the fitted price.
